The use of turpentine balsam for first aid treatment

First aid with pine resin oil

Turpentine balsam is an infusion of cedar resin on the base of cedar nut oil which is also called Cedar Nut Oil enriched with Cedar Resin. This balsam is an effective natural antioxidant, metabolic catalyst and antiseptic. On a daily basis it can be used for many purposes: as a biologically active food supplement, a skin and hair care product, and for relaxing or medical massages.

Since turpentine balsam combines powerful healing properties of cedar nut oil and cedar resin, it is capable of healing various skin problems, such as burns, frostbite and wounds.

Just as the resin creates a protective barrier on a damaged Siberian cedar trunk, it can protect and heal a human as well. The benefits of resin extract in first aid have been known for a long time: the first signs of its use date back to the Neolithic era [1], and during World War II, turpentine balsam was used in Russian hospitals to heal wounded soldiers.

This is why it is worth having this remedy in your first aid kit.

How to use turpentine balsam for burns, frostbite and wounds?

It is suitable for treating both thermal and sunburns, as well as frostbite, abrasions, scratches, and bruises.

In the case of sunburn, immediately massage the balsam onto skin. There is no need to apply a bandage.

If you have scalded yourself with boiling water or got a thermal burn by any other means, soak a bandage made of natural fabric with the turpentine balsam and apply it to the burn area. This will relieve pain and prevent blistering or scarring.

For frostbite use the product in the same way as for thermal burns. You can enhance the balsam effect and speed up healing process by adding honey.

The effectiveness of the balsam is due to the content of vitamin E that enhances skins' ability to regenerate tissue causing reduced scarring. Cedar nut oil also contains unsaturated fatty acids that stimulate wound healing [2]; while cedar resin is built of terpenes that have analgesic and antiseptic properties.

The resin extract can also help with other wounds: it is enough to massage it gently into abrasions or scratches 2-3 times a day. In order to get rid of bruises, a compress should be made: moisten a piece of the bandage with the remedy, place it on the damaged area and leave it for 1 - 2 days.
