ONE HECTARE Against the World Crisis

A triumphal way out of the world-wide crisis is being demonstrated in practice by one and a half thousand Russian families!

In various regions of Russia, families are acquiring a hectare of land apiece in abandoned areas, on which they are constructing their kin's domains, their own small homeland.

There are no difficulties that can frighten them. Neither the absence of support from the government, nor the absence of an infrastructure, many of them are still living in tents, others have already constructed their own homes, planted a garden. Children born on the domain are taking their first small, barefoot steps on the grass. The sensation of a wonderful future is inspiring the populace. The enthusiasm of elderly people and youth is similar to the enthusiasm of the members of the Young Communist League -- the builders of the Baikal-Amur railways and the developers of the virgin lands.

People of various nationalities and faiths, on the whole with a higher education and academic degrees, have already prepared draft legislation respecting the kin's domain and are discussing it with fervour on the www.Anastasia.ru site.

They are appealing to the government and the President, they assert that, with the support of the government, the new ideology of the family life-style described in the "Ringing Cedars of Russia" series of books is capable of extracting the country from the crisis in several days and completely eliminating unemployment.

The crisis will disappear when a person and his or her family can clearly imagine their future.

This movement of families inspired by the ideas of constructing kin's domains is also developing in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Canada, USA, Australia and many others.

Someone may think that this is all a fantasy, however the pessimists can see with their own eyes how people, through their enthusiasm alone, are gladly settling previously abandoned lands and beginning to live in their own happy future. They are all readers of Vladimir Megre's "Ringing Cedars of Russia" series of books.

"A new ideology is needed, a life-style ideology," they say. "It exists, it is in the books of the Russian writer Vladimir Megre, we are all readers of these books."

More than 150 settlements consisting of kin's domains have already been formed in various regions of Russia. Their number continues to increase. It is completely obvious that a national idea has been born among the people. With the support of the government, the greatest force will be mobilized -- the people!

Excerpt from the speech of V. N. Megre in Zurich (Switzerland)

Question from the audience:
How do you associate a hectare of land with the spiritual formation of man? Maybe the problem of farming is important for Russia but here in Europe this problem has already been resolved. We have gathered here to speak about spirituality.

Vladimir Megre

Answer of V. N. Megre:
I mean a hectare of land used for creation of Kin's Domain, and some may think it's primitive. Apparently we need to speak about great sciences and spirituality because these are the main topics of this prestigious European forum. I know this because the organizers told me that in this auditorium there are many famous European innovators-educators, philosophers and writers, along with other important people, who are writing and thinking about spirituality. I do understand who is sitting in front of me and it is for this very reason that I speak about a hectare of land.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am absolutely sure that such notions as love and spirituality must have their material implementation.

A hectare of land that I bring fourth and that Anastasia is talking about - it is not just a piece of land. This is a space connecting you with the Universe. All the planets of the Universe will respond to this space and, consequently, to you. They will become your friends, assistants and co-creators.

Look at what is happening according to the laws of nature: even a simple flower, like a chamomile, is inseparably associated with the Universe, planets and the Sun. A flower opens its petals to the rising sun, and is closes them when the Sun goes down. They are united in harmony with each other. Trillions of miles and light years cannot separate them. They are together - the Great Sun in the sky and a small earthly flower. They both know that only together they are the creators of great harmony of the Universe.

However, each little grass responds not only to the Sun. They also respond to other planets, human beings and energy of their feelings.

There was an experiment conducted by scientists. They hooked up several sensors to an indoor flower sensing even the slightest energy impulse coming from the flower. People were entering the room in turn. One was just passing by, the other was coming up to the flower to water it and the third was tearing away little piece of the flower leaves. The sensors registered that when the person, who used to tear away pieces of leaves, was entering the room, the flower was turning nervous and the needle on the indicator was deflecting.

One can often see the phenomenon when the flowers are fading after man has left. So we understand that all plants respond to man. They may love or not love man and therefore pass their love or repugnance to their planets.

And now imagine that you have this space - a hectare of land. Not just a hectare of land with potatoes you grow for sale, but a hectare of land where you are creating something having a certain level of consciousness and spirituality. You have your own territory where all vegetation has been planted by yourself and not by men you hired. Each plant and grass love you; and those plants, those living creatures are capable of collecting for you all the best energies of the Universe; collecting and giving them away to you. Plants are using not only energy of Earth. You know that there are some plants that can grow without any soil at all.

Five thousand years ago the priests living in ancient Egypt created many religions. Those priests were ruling whole nations. They were the richest people of those times. Their basements were full of gold and jewelry and they mastered many secret sciences. Even the Pharaohs used to come to them for advice and money. And each of those high-ranking priests had his hectare of land, where no slaves were allowed to work. Those richest people, who mastered many sciences, knew the secret of a hectare of land. The walls of ancient temples of Egypt had the inscription "Do not take food from your slave". This is one example.

Here is another one. The senators of ancient Rome issued an edict that if a slave could do some farming, and has been given a plot of land, his master could sell him to another master only with land. And why did the Roman senators give land to some slaves? And sometimes even money so that they could build themselves a house? For one and only reason - to take 10% of the crop.

Both Egyptian priests and Roman senators knew which food was good for man. In no form or shape should we eat the food we are actually eating now - it is dead. There's a great difference between the berries you pick from the bush and eat right away and berries sold at the store. The thing is not only that they are old. They don't have any energy. They cannot feed human soul. To say nothing about our technocratic world, which created plants-mutants.

So, if you do not have your own hectare of land, there is no place where you can get the food that man deserves. Of course, you can buy some vegetables, but make no mistake - those vegetables were not grown for you. They were grown not for man at all. They were grown for money.

There is no sickness that can't be cured by the space of love created by your hands and soul.

Men are children of God. Flora and fauna, air and everything around us is God's creation. And all together it is nothing else but materialization of God's spirit. If a person calls himself highly spiritual, let him show materialization of his spirituality.

Just imagine that God is looking at us now. And he sees some of his children driving a streetcar, some building houses, some salespeople working at stores. But he did not create those professions. They are for slaves. God did not want his children to turn into slaves. And he created a wonderful world and gave it to his children - take it and use it! But one must understand this world - what is the Moon, and what is small grass called milfoil.

So what is a hectare of land than? Is this the place where man must work up a sweat? NO! This is the place where man should not work at all! This is the place man must use to rule the Universe. Tell me, who will please God more: someone driving a streetcar or someone, who has turned his little piece of land into paradise? Of course, someone who has turned his land into paradise.

Can we allow people to open their way to the space today and teach them how to develop Mars and Moon? No way! Because there will be weapons and waste, wars will break out just like on Earth. But Man has been created so that he could go to other worlds. This will happen only when man learns and develops the planet he lives on. The planets of the Universe will be mastered by means of psychotelepathy and not by means of technologies.

Man should understand where is the real beauty of the Universe.

Your Swiss city Zurich is considered to be beautiful. For a thousand times we can say it is beautiful. But what specifically makes it beautiful? Yes, it is very clean and many people look well provided for. But is the land covered with this asphalt also beautiful? Is it good that there are only few precious green islands? Is it good that a wonderful tree, cedar, is dying in your city's core? It can't breath because of smog and exhaust fumes. It's not only the cedar that can't breath and is dying. Man walking along the streets can't breath either.

We should realize what we have done to this planet. And we better speak in a simple language about it. Let us all take a little piece of land, collect all of our intelligence and spirituality and create a very little but specific paradise. Let each person turn a little piece of land on this big planet into a blooming garden materializing his spirituality, just as God did it. If millions of people in different countries do it, than the Earth will turn into a blooming garden and there will be no wars because people will be involved in great co-creation. And if Russians do set out to Switzerland or Germany, it will be just to enjoy the views of wonderful living oases and to adopt the experience of how to materialize genuine spirituality.

Unfortunately, Russia is striving to adopt everything from the West. Speaking of Western countries, the Russian politicians are using such words as "developed" and "civilized" and encourage catching up with their "development" and "civilization". Our politicians do not know yet that we can not only quickly catch up but also surpass. It will happen though if we run in the opposite direction.

By no means would I like to insult or play down the importance of your Western civilization. But we are talking about spirituality and we should be sincere to each other. Spirituality can't be measured only by material wealth or technical achievements. I am sure all of you here will admit that such one-sided and technocratic way of development of humanity is inevitably taking us to a disaster. You will also have to admit that you are leading in this race to the abyss and we are following you. Try to stop and think over what happened to our world. If you can absorb and realize it, than shout to those following you: "Stop! Don't run! There is an abyss here and we are already on the verge of it. Look for another way".

We all, together, should listen to our hearts and should pass from words about spirituality to its materialization. A hectare is a tiny spot on Earth. But millions of such spots will turn the whole planet into a blooming garden. Trillions of flower petals, happy smiles of older people and kids will tell the Universe:

"People of Earth are ready for the great co-creation."
"We are waiting for you", the planets of the Universe will answer. "We are waiting for you, worthy Son of God".
The new millennium has laid down the foundation of a great transformation on Earth. Tens of thousands of Russian families are already on the way to their hectare of land. Fathers and mothers, who really create a space of love for their children, are more spiritual than any of the most famous wise men that do nothing but speak about spirituality.

May the spirit of each person grow from this land as a beautiful flower or a tree with flavored fruit and may it happen on each hectare of our planet.

(There was an absolute silence after these words and then the audience burst into applause.)

THE GOVERNOR LIKED IT HERE

It has already been nine years since we have been living on our Kin's Domain on a permanent basis. We own two hectares of land. We obtained the land in a deserted farmstead. We bought the half-rundown house for 1500 rubles, we also got an impassible old orchard overgrown with maple and blackthorn, and piles of garbage. There was a lot of work, but our hands did what at first glance was overwhelming.

We had little money, so we economized on everything. From an untrimmed plank that we purchased, we prepared floor boards, a wagon, window frames, etc., on a home-made wood-working machine.

We built and did everything with our own hands, and always together. Today even we find it difficult to believe that all this (we are attaching a photograph) was created by us.

Our new house is not large -- 28 square metres -- built of untrimmed pine logs. We restored the old house, and use it for a workshop and household needs.

Both houses have warm stoves with benches, we stoke them with firewood, which we have an enormous amount of following the clearing of the old orchard.

In addition we dug our own well, so our "public utilities" operate properly and free of charge.

We keep a cow, and turn the milk into cottage cheese, cheese, cream, butter, and although this takes a great deal of time, it provides us with independence, both financially and from the point of view of our food supply. We sell our surplus dairy production once a week in Belgorod -- to fill orders.

The boom in consumer goods is contagious, and if the temptation arises to buy something, we first think it over and decide whether we can manage without it, if we can, then we don't buy it.  So, what we have from the sale of our dairy production is sufficient for us.

Our market garden, orchard, young forest, chickens, and cow provide us with our food. Our domain has already begun to produce walnuts, hazelnuts, apricots, grapes, cherries, sweet cherries, cherry-plums, cornel, plums, raspberries, currants, gooseberries, strawberries, and other things.

And beneath our pine trees we gather mushrooms by the basketful.

We grow a small quantity of cereals, but some, for example buckwheat, barley, oats, must be hulled, we have not yet found any special mini-machines, so for the time being we purchase these groats.

From a farmer of our acquaintance we obtain sunflower for oil and grain for ourselves for flour and for the animals.

Since we keep bees and have our own natural honey, we do not buy sugar.

We try to eliminate any poor health with natural remedies, including herbs from our own land.

We work a great deal, and our neighbors call us workaholics and obsessive, but we have a lot of plans, and we really want our space to become more beautiful.

Now we work at a more measured pace, since everything necessary for life in the domain is already here, and this type of work brings us pleasure, we really enjoy it.

And there is such beauty all around us, we want to make it even better and better.

In summer 2008, the Governor of Belgorod Oblast visited us, he had also read all of Vladimir Megre's books and supports the idea of Kin's Domains. He really liked it here, and he expressed his wish to have more such domains.

Today everyone is afraid of the crisis, but we have no crisis, where would it come from: we have our own produce, there is always some money, we have big plans in store. But the most important thing is a peaceful life and confidence in tomorrow, because we are relying only on ourselves, and taking responsibility on ourselves for how we live and are going to live, without relying on the government.

The lands in the community have been registered as private property. The category of the lands is agricultural purpose lands. All the lands are registered for carrying out personal, subsidiary farming. The community extends in a wide belt from the north side of the Skomorokhovo-Andreevckoe Road for a distance of four kilometres. More than 100 parcels of land have been registered, with a total area of more than 250 hectares. At the present time (as of March 2009), 18 families reside in the community. In these families, right on the domains, nine children have already been delivered by the hands of their happy dads.
The community is located about 150–170 km from Moscow, you can get there in two hours (longer, if there are traffic jams).

Natural environment of the village and its surroundings:

There are parcels with the following types of forest growth:
With individual woody plants five to seven years old
With a fence of young trees

Ecovillage near Chik-Elga

Winter in the Ecovillage

May all your thoughts be healthy, dear fellow dreamers!

We invite you to a settlement that is being created near the village of Chik-Elga (Arkhangelskoe District, Republic of Bashkortostan)!

Beautiful mountainous landscape, 110 km from Ufa along the Beloretskaya Highway, the road from the highway is asphalt 10 km to the village of Maksim Gorky, 3 km of gravel road to the village of Chik-Elga.

The roads are plowed in the winter. Near the village flows the small mountain river Skimka. Here there are many berries and mushrooms. We have pine trees, and springs.

On the whole, these are wonderful areas: the cleanest air, complete silence (guaranteed by the distance from the highway), at the foot of the mountains grow wild apple trees with large, succulent apples, all around are mountains and forests.

At the present we have the approval of the Head of the District Administration for 34 (thirty-four) hectares on the strip of the expansion of the borders of the populated area. The Village Council has already begun the process of converting and registering the lands in the category of settlement lands. We are assisting them. The surveying of the common parcel has already been carried out, and application has been made for a decision regarding the land-ownership registration and the receipt of a land-ownership certificate. In this matter we are providing financial support and assistance in coordinating the documents (of course, the Administration of the Village Council can coordinate all this, but for them it would take two years for absolutely everything, while we will be able to do it in half a year, since we have an interest in it).

At the present moment, nine families are ready to acquire land and build, there are those who are still considering it, but this is the number who have definitely decided.

Following the conversion of the lands to the category of populated-area land, it will be necessary for us to carry out local residence registration (there are three scenarios: come to an agreement with the local authorities about permanent registration; second, perhaps, if anyone has friends in Arkhangelskoe District, acquaintances not necessarily in Chik-Elga, one can register in any village of Arkhangelskoe District; third, purchase a common house and register there), after which there is the possibility for a family to lease up to 50 ares for three years (it is possible, for example, to do it this way: a family with parents and children -- two applications for 50 ares for a total of one hectare). Then, after construction, it will be possible to register the land as property (at the moment -- through redemption at the land-registration price, which is now 10.38 rubles per square metre).

So, if you have an interest in setting up your own kin's domain, you can come to have a look at the land.

Location (see the map): village of Arkhangelskoe (along the Beloretskaya Highway), then turn left and go south to the village of Maksim Gorky, then follow the sign "Priuralovka" and the first village on the way is our village of Chik-Elga beyond the bridge over the Skimka River. Beyond the village in the direction of the mountain are the lands for the development of the village (the road runs parallel to the mountain and then to the south-east).

And if you like our land, we will be happy to see you at our meeting. We meet every week (every Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.).

Contact telephone numbers:
Elvira 89033550123, or 89174561391 Oksana

Welcome to our friendly collective!

Our plans also include the expansion of the settlement as quickly as possible.

We would like the settlement to be well-populated. A minimum of 50 families, with a view to 150, but for the time being we have to begin with 25.

We are awaiting people who are ready, in the near future, to build, live on their domain, and set themselves up! Since we are creating a settlement of kin's domains for year-round residence.

We will appreciate your cooperation and are ready to answer any questions!

Young people want to revive a village

Having exchanged the comfort of the city for the inconveniences of the village, the young people have had a taste of real life.

"It's not penal servitude here, and it's not the 'Survivor' show," immediately said Konstantin (Kostya) Sanyuta, who will receive the qualifications of a military signaller in a year's time. "The people who have gathered here all share the same views, what's more, we've come together only of our own free will. We wanted to live this way, and have already taken the first step to realizing our dream."

In Legeydy there are seven persons living in primitive conditions: three graduates of the Kiev University of Technology and Design -- Svetlana (Sveta), Ekaterina (Katya), and Anastasia (Nastya) (two of them came with their boyfriends) -- and two former classmates -- Kostya Sanyuta and Sergey Gaytan, who graduated with honours from the Poltava Institute of Civil Engineering. The oldest in the group is Sergey Lysenko from Novaya Kakhovka, Kherson Oblast. He is 36 years old, he's a Ukrainian bicycling champion among veterans, and came here following his girlfriend Katya. Sergey is seriously preparing for upcoming competitions, so he pedals up to 200 kilometres a day in the neighboring areas, Katya rides with him for company. That is why we didn't find them at home, but had breakfast with the three who stayed on the farm that morning. Our conversation took place over a cup of tea infused with marjoram and strawberry leaves.

It became immediately clear that the month and a half spent in these spartan conditions had not destroyed the spirit of romance in these young people. They believe that everything will definitely work out for them. The biggest plan: to build houses on the steep banks (each according to the owner's taste), raise domestic animals, join two local ponds into one, stock it with fish. The young people want to show the beauties of the area to others as well, so they dream of being involved in "green" tourism, and also learning folk handicrafts....

In answer to the question, whether they will have the strength for this, the group answers all together: "We'll pull through!" The initiative to get further away from civilization and move to the countryside belongs to Anastasia Kucher, from Poltava. Before this, in the group, there were only conversations, dreams. Nastya turned out to be the most decisive, insisted on searching for a village. The young people went through many villages before their choice settled on the most deserted and most beautiful. Before settling in the deserted village, the young people travelled many kilometres in the search for their place under the sun. Many people looked at them as if they were aliens, in several villages the authorities put forward conditions that were clearly impossible to fulfill.

The young people arrived in Shishaki in all seriousness and for the long haul.

They want to revive the village of Legeydy in Shishaki District, Poltava Oblast. The group of young "aboriginals" settled in this out-of-the-way place a month and a half ago. You can call them eccentrics or adventurers, but they disagree and insist that they came to Legeydy in all seriousness and for the long haul. Here there is no light, gas, or standard housing. The road to the village is only dirt, the closest stores are about five kilometres away. The young people travel there on bicycles -- for groceries and to refill their cell phones. By the way, it's impossible to use them here -- there is no network coverage. To speak with the "wide world" you have to climb a hill.

On the other hand, here there is clean air, herbs, wild animals and birds, many lizards and snakes, and also five allotments of land each consisting of 25 ares. Precisely these parcels are "holding" the young people here, young people who have exchanged the comfort of city apartments for a spartan way of life. Many of their acquaintances do not understand them, some even sympathize with them and wonder whether they will survive or not....

FIRST THINGS FIRST

The young people do not call village life difficult. But some ordeals have already befallen them on their path. The most difficult is already behind them: it took three days (!) for the young people to fight their way to the only house more or less fit to live in. The thing was that, having heard about the settlers, enterprising people removed the slate from the remaining 20 houses, but had not gotten to the very last one. Most likely since it was practically invisible because of the overgrowth and the approach to it was inaccessible.

"We had to sweat even more to go down a hill, climb another, and descend once more. Not travelling light, but loaded down with our important possessions: two couches, a 350-litre tank for water, and window frames," recalls Kostya. "We hired a utility taxi, but the driver only drove to where the asphalt ended, and refused to ruin his vehicle. It took us two days to cover those two kilometres. The four men had to lug everything."

Immediately on their arrival, the young people mowed down the tall weeds in the area, collected water from the stagnant well, "borrowed" a pair of beams from an abandoned farm to construct a summer shower, changed the windows in the house, found and set up a bench perfectly suitable for relaxing....

THE CHAIRMAN PROMISED TO GIVE A HECTARE OF LAND APIECE

Vasiliy Magda, the Chairman of the Shishaki Village Council, welcomed them joyfully, saying, "It's a wonderful idea you've come up with -- reviving the village. We'll do whatever we can to help."

Now he does not conceal the fact that the young people have caused him quite a few headaches. "Just think now where we can come up with 200 000 hryvna to string about two kilometres of high-voltage line to Legeydy, and rebuild an electrical switching station. All this was removed and dismantled a long time ago." Vasiliy Magda shrugs his shoulders. "What can you do if the rental of a grader costs 1000 hryvna an hour? But this money must be found to make an access to the village. Even under the Soviet authorities asphalt was being laid to the village, but they didn't manage to finish -- people left the village, which had no future, before the road was completed." Legeydy remained about two kilometres from the asphalt, and to get to it over the rugged steep hills it is best to have military technology or strong legs.

But the members of the local council, after examining the young people's application to grant them land in Legeydy, unanimously voted "yea." Immediately afterwards, almost a year ago, the five visiting city-dwellers became the owners of parcels of virgin land. The chairman promised that they would receive more later -- a hectare each. But, before this happens, they have to demonstrate the seriousness of their intentions. For a start, even clear the space for a foundation on one of the parcels -- that was the condition of the village council.

Meanwhile, the village council received another six applications from persons wanting to move from cities to the deserted village. These were friends of the young people who had already settled here. The new applicants had come to visit, and were not afraid of the lack of domestic conveniences. Boundless meadows, lofty sky, unspoiled wild nature -- they too did not want to leave. "And now we are not going to leave!" the young settlers insist with a single voice.

IN THE WINTER THEY WILL GO TO THE CITY TO EARN MONEY

The young people hope to earn their initial capital over the winter, and to begin the construction of their houses in the spring of next year. Definitely from adobe (that is, clay mixed with straw). The ancestors of the Ukrainians lived in houses of this material, which conserves warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer. Sergey Gaytan, a qualified civil engineer, who lived in a cramped city apartment for 23 years, dreams of a spacious detached two-story house with a fireplace. While Kostya, whose parents have a large house with a garden and a summer home, wants to invest the maximum amount of funds into the design. He is planning to erect, as he puts it, a house in the shape of a mushroom or snail. Svetlana Severin is also striving for originality. In her imagination -- her own property with a small, three-room house with round windows, decorated with ornaments. Her dreams include at least a small stable.

The lack of electrical power does not bother the future new settlers: they say that if light isn't brought to Legeydy by next spring, they themselves will install a generator and will still begin laying a foundation. The young people have no doubt that the road will come through.

THE MEN MISS THE INTERNET CONNECTION

The young people have no time to long for the hustle and bustle of the city. Sergey and Kostya, inveterate computer buffs, miss their connection to the world wide web. When electric power arrives, the problem will disappear. Sergey does not rule out the possibility that, sitting in this forgotten village, he will be able to earn money by writing texts for sites, just as he did in the city. But Sveta insists that, during her years as a student, she had enough of spending three to four hours a day in the subway, and so she has absolutely no desire for civilization. The local boys taught her how to mow grass, and she just barely mowed her own parcel. And a retiree from the nearest village -- where they go on bicycles (sometimes on a scooter) to the store -- made her a fishing-rod. "Now if I could only find fish somewhere," says Sveta. "I gather herbs and prepare fragrant teas with them, I bring ripe fruit from forest apricot stands." All the time she has free from her few activities she spends walking in the vicinity. In the future, perhaps, she will take up designing and sewing clothes for the village dwellers -- she's already received suggestions from them.

During the period of their life of freedom, the young settlers have formed something resembling a commune, but everything is kept on voluntary terms, without strict regulations or responsibilities for everyone. The cooking, it is true, falls more to the lot of Svetlana, but then she also receives all the compliments from the men. For breakfast, the group has ordinary pasta, salad, and tea. The young people say that each dish is made with heart: Kostya brought a recipe book from home, and the fellows glance in it to find something for the daily feast. The taste of food made using well water is strikingly different from that using the city water-supply.

They eat from a communal pot, but there is no common fund: they each buy what they consider necessary, according to their means.

THE ABORIGINALS DO NOT PLAN TO GET SICK

A particular topic among the young people is their parents. They say that not all the parents have resigned themselves to the choice their children have made: at a time when many people are trying to escape from the village, from its problems, this group has done exactly the opposite. "Moms and dads want their sons and daughters to be successful, and they don't always understand why they don't conform to the standard ways of life. We all came to our senses in time, and now we can build our life the way we envision it. We don't want to get financing for the purchase of bird-nests in the city, where everyone trips over each other. It is possible to invest that same money -- and even much less -- in the creation of a kin's estate and then bring our parents here. They have never known personal freedom, were always busy seeking out the means for their sustenance, let them find rest here. Our parents understand that our desire to break out of the box that we, just like them, have been squeezed into since our births is not such a bad idea, and for that reason they continue to support us materially," Konstantin told Segodnya.

The young people, of course, do not intend to make a final break with the outer world and live like hermits. Even now they visit their relatives every two weeks, and with the coming of the autumn cold, they plan to leave until the spring. But until then, there are many plans: restore the village stove that had been demolished by pillagers. Someone will still have to remain: to guard the house where a great deal of resources and efforts have been invested.

"We are adults, it's time for us to think of our own descendants," Kostya explains his choice this way. "I remember the terror in my parents eyes when I got sick when I was small. They crammed hundreds of pills into me. At that time parents did not understand that it was necessary to fight not the disease, but the ecology in the city: the polluted air and chlorinated water. We are often asked, 'What will you do when you get sick in that backwoods?' But we do not intend to get sick, because we have already recovered our health, and our immunity has become much higher than it was before. Physical labour and sleep in the fresh air, ecologically pure produce grown with our own hands. Try it and see for yourself."

Welcome to
SPACE of LOVE Magazine!

Third Issue is out!

Many of us agree that our planet and world are in profound transition - facing a turning point in human history. Some say that we as a people have had this same chance many times before in our near and far history. Each time, so history shows, humanity sank back once more, en mass, into the same spiritual sleep. But once more, we are also closer than ever to be able to turn this planet into the paradise it was meant to be.

At this time on Earth, more people than ever are committed to awaken and to stay awake even as a large percentage of the world's beautiful people are being hypnotized and mass-manipulated out of their divine powers by only a few dark minds. We seem to have forgotten our most inviolable power, to love each other and co-create this beautiful Earth as a Space of Love, the metaphorical and literal paradise-like garden it was meant to be.

We were inspired to create this magazine by the incredible wisdom and vision of a young, beautiful recluse living in the wild of the Siberian Taiga, Anastasia, and a courageous author, Vladimir Megre. He has recorded her amazing, encouraging story and wisdom for us in a series of ten books, and eleven million best-selling copies, translated into over twenty of the world's languages.

We create and write through this meeting place, this Space of Love, for those of us who are ready to help transform and see this planet as the luscious paradise it was meant to be. Anastasia envisions and holds for us a foreseeable future where every man, woman, child and animal can eat and live in peace and harmony.

Our mandate is to share writings and ideas which help us transfer this inspiring vision into joyful lives all over the world.

The Light of Woman

Her Light is infinite, eternal, beyond realms,
It can soothe the spirit and quiet a young cry.
She can carry the darkness of the world within her,
And can burn it with her Love in just one try.

Her heart calls out to her beloved,
And he answers as a moth to a flame.
And just before the heat consumes his last breath,
The fire with her love she does tame.

As a well pouring forth the waters of life,
She allows His Light and from within her sets it free.
And from the depths of eternity returns His Love,
Unbound, unwound, and allowed to simply be.

this video makes one wonder, what if these humans working at a slaughter house were to see humans imprisoned as the animals are. that's the way I feel about these places. if you can't put a human in such a position without feeling bad, then you can't put anyone in that position. I've become vegetarian for the most part. every now and then I'll be at an event here at school where they sere free food, and I'll eat something with meat, but that's dying off too now, as I like my own home cooked food more and more, and can't stand to buy or cook meat myself. Fried or cooked eggs I've abandoned a while back, when I noticed I would always feel a bit sleepy after eating them. However, I'm still working on getting rid of eggs from the baked goods I eat.

Spread the word about Anastasia! It's just one more tap on the shoulder people get about vegetarianism!

This video may not be suitable for minors.

It has taken me a long time to get to this point -- to the place where I felt like I wanted to make a sentimental montage of Posie's birth. I know it makes me sound like a Whiny McWhinerton to complain -- heck, I had an unassisted home waterbirth, right? The truth is, her birth shook me and my belief in my body and my belief in birth. I got a call today from a former student and doula client who decided with her third child to be induced. She then decided on an epidural before she was even dilating. She happily told me she played cards the rest of her labor. Her husband was incredulous and said, "You mean it could have been this good the other times too?" My first thought was, "How could you? How could you want to birth all numb and happy like that?" and on its heels was "Shut up, you freakin' hypocrite." Because my thoughts are that if I had a labor like Posie's again, I would get an epidural. I would not put myself through it. It has taken me these 8.5 months to get to the point where I can even say I would attempt another homebirth. Finally, God has applied the balm of amnesia and I'm starting to consider the idea that if I had another baby, I would still do it at home.

I know that her birth, and the subsequent journey I needed to take afterwards, have made me a better midwife. It gave me such renewed perspective, and a deep, humble, appreciation for the pain some women experience in birth. Sure, for most women, it's just not that bad. But for this birth, for me, it was. It was enough to cause a postpartum depression that took medication to pull me out. It was enough to cause me to consider skipping the homebirth altogether next time and get to play cards through my labor. But now, I know I wouldn't want that. I wouldn't want to not FEEL the baby coming through my body. To be so in tune with her, to feel every inch of her as she slid peacefully out. That was worth the pain. If I numbed the pain of the labor, I would miss the BIRTH. And isn't that what it's about?

The Parenting Puzzle:

Protecting Our Kids: Where Should We Draw the Line?

by Anne Leedom

In today's world there are so many threats to our kids' physical and emotional well being that it is almost overwhelming. Cyber-bullying, kidnapping, too much violence and sex in the media and of course, the scars and damage that can occur in marriage and divorce. If these issues have kept you up at night, stay tuned as we will be dedicating more content to the crucial things you need to know to help you determine when to protect your kids and when to back off a bit. We will provide tools, experts and strategies to help you learn what you need to know and to find support to make the hard choices that must be made to keep our kids safe.

It is one thing to limit their time online or what they watch on TV, however when the issues are related to a bad parent, a bad teacher, or other danger that we don't always have control over, it can be very hard to know how to proceed. Most often the real dangers are not the ones we worry about when our kids are out with friends. It is typically at the hands of someone they know where the real damage occurs.

Family, friends, teachers and even their own parent can prove to be more harmful than any R rated movie they may see at a sleepover with their buddies and it is this particular threat that I will be focusing on the most.

These kinds of threats are the most dangerous because it can be difficult to know how to respond when a family member or teacher is in some way setting off the alarm bells in you and your child. If you find yourself in a situation where you are concerned, but not sure how to proceed, here are some tips to help you navigate these often frightening waters.

1. Listen to your child. This is the first and most important way to determine if there is a real threat. Is there a consistent and ongoing sense of fear or dread when they are around the person, or when the person is discussed? Kids often may have a reaction to someone based on something that happened at school or in the home that isn't based on real possible danger. So listen and watch and see if the fear or concern is consistent and ongoing.

2. Talk to your child. Kids will often be uncomfortable or in some cases, completely afraid to discuss a situation when they do truly feel there is danger. The more uncomfortable your child is, the better the chances are that there may be a problem. Find a subtle way to bring up the issue without directly asking them to confront the problem. If the conversation doesn't feel threatening they are more likely to open up.

3. Bring in a third party. If you do see a potential problem you should consider having your child talk to an outside party you trust. This can be a difficult process but the validation they receive and the safe environment that a counselor can provide will help them feel like they can talk more openly.
If there is a genuine problem, having the counselor in your corner can be very helpful. This is especially true if you are dealing with an abusive spouse or ex and you need confirmation of what is happening to your child.

4. Model strength and assertiveness. If you do discover there is a true cause for concern then it is up to you as the parent to show your child that nothing is more important than their safety and security. This may mean changing schools, moving, or divorcing your spouse and fighting for sole custody. However, if there is a real threat, than the most important gift you can give to your child is to teach them to be assertive and to stand up for themselves. This will not be the only time in their lives where they will be at risk in some way. Using this situation to teach them how to stand up for themselves, regardless of who the threat may be coming from is a very powerful tool to give them as they grow.

This issue needs to be discussed much more in my opinion. There are parents and teachers and friends who often put our kids in horrific positions and they need help knowing how to respond and how to process the confusion that comes from being hurt by people they thought they could trust. It is a unique and particularly damaging scenario and one that needs to talked about. There is help and some great information available and it is the most important job of being a parenting...protecting our kids.

Parenting For A Peaceful World

The Breathtaking Effects Of Cutting Back On Meat

by Kathy Freston

I've written extensively on the consequences of eating meat - on our health, our sense of "right living", and on the environment. It is one of those daily practices that has such a broad and deep effect that I think it merits looking at over and over again, from all the different perspectives. Sometimes, solutions to the world's biggest problems are right in front of us. The following statistics are eye-opening, to say the least.

If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would save:

- 100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months;

- 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year;

- 70 million gallons of gas--enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined with plenty to spare;

- 3 million acres of land, an area more than twice the size of Delaware;

- 33 tons of antibiotics.

If everyone went vegetarian just for one day, the U.S. would prevent:

- Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2, as much as produced by all of France;

- 3 million tons of soil erosion and $70 million in resulting economic damages;

- 4.5 million tons of animal excrement;

- Almost 7 tons of ammonia emissions, a major air pollutant.

My favorite statistic is this: According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads. See how easy it is to make an impact?

Other points:

Globally, we feed 756 million tons of grain to farmed animals. As Princeton bioethicist Peter Singer notes in his new book, if we fed that grain to the 1.4 billion people who are living in abject poverty, each of them would be provided more than half a ton of grain, or about 3 pounds of grain/day--that's twice the grain they would need to survive. And that doesn't even include the 225 million tons of soy that are produced every year, almost all of which is fed to farmed animals. He writes, "The world is not running out of food. The problem is that we--the relatively affluent--have found a way to consume four or five times as much food as would be possible, if we were to eat the crops we grow directly."

A recent United Nations report titled Livestock's Long Shadow concluded that the meat industry causes almost 40% more greenhouse gas emissions than all the world's transportation systems--that's all the cars, trucks, SUVs, planes and ships in the world combined. The report also concluded that factory farming is one of the biggest contributors to the most serious environmental problems at every level--local and global.

Researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that switching from standard American diet to a vegan diet is more effective in the fight against global warming than switching from a standard American car to a hybrid.

In its report, the U.N. found that the meat industry causes local and global environmental problems even beyond global warming. It said that the meat industry should be a main focus in every discussion of land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortages and pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

Unattributed statistics were calculated from scientific reports by Noam Mohr, a physicist with the New York University Polytechnic Institute.

There's never been a better time to be - or become - a vegetarian in veggie-friendly Toronto

But is it really any healthier? Like anything, it depends on moderation.

by Megan Ogilvie

If there's one sure sign that vegetarianism has moved from the margins to the mainstream in Toronto, it must surely be the arrival of offal-free haggis.

Not that haggis is a regular dish on the city's dining-room tables. But now there are vegetarian foods for every persuasion.

And as Scots and others prepare to celebrate Robbie Burns Day on Jan. 25, those who want to toast the poet with this classic Scottish dish but aren't partial to meat - traditionally, haggis consists of minced sheep organs, beef suet, toasted oatmeal and spices, all stuffed and steamed inside a sheep stomach - can now do so without the animal ick factor.

It seems that more and more people are resolving to become vegetarians. And haggis is just the latest meat-based food to go veg.

MOST LARGE grocery stores in the city already stock "mock-dogs" instead of wieners, veggie burgers, tofurkey and teriyaki tofu kebabs. And for those who eschew anything that comes from animals, there are "gourmet" soy cheeses, milk made from nuts, rice or grains, and even hemp ice cream. Add to that the proliferation of veggie-friendly restaurants, from raw food joints to South Asian buffets to your favourite hot dog vendor, and this just might be the best time to be - or become - a vegetarian in Toronto.

Kathleen Farley, a vegetarian since 1991 and executive director of the Toronto Vegetarian Association, estimates there are at least 100,000 vegetarians in the city (her figure is based on a 1997 study by the National Institute of Nutrition, now called the Canadian Council of Food and Nutrition). She figures that number is probably rising due to a herbivore synergy that goes something like: the more ubiquitous vegetarian products and dining become, the more people will be open to trying them, and the more people who embrace the lifestyle, the more demand for products and meals.

"Our organization has grown exponentially over the last 60 years," says Farley.

And, on a more personal note, she adds: "It's very rare when I go to a restaurant now that there is nothing for me to eat."

About 15,000 people attend the association's annual Vegetarian Food Fair, the largest of its kind in North America, which takes over Harbourfront Centre for three days in September with more than 100 exhibitors. And this year, the association lists 162 veg-friendly businesses in the print edition and 370 in the Web edition of its Vegetarian Directory.

In the not-so-long-ago past - say, the 1980s - the majority of those who decided to go meatless did so for philosophical reasons, or because of concern over animal welfare in the meat industry.

But now, there are many other reasons people choose to go veggie.

According to some dietitians, baby boomers, worried about ballooning waistlines, heart health and cholesterol levels, are starting to avoid red meat, which is high in saturated fat. Last year, an international panel of experts commissioned by the World Cancer Research Fund reviewed 7,000 scientific studies and found eating too much red meat and processed meats, such as bacon and pepperoni, increase a person's risk of developing colorectal cancer. People trying to reduce their environmental impact are also opting for meat-free cuisine. Some experts say eating a plant-based diet uses fewer resources and creates less greenhouse gas emissions than a meat-based diet.

Statistics Canada figures don't support the idea of an overall recent decline in red meat consumption - estimated figures suggest it actually went up slightly between 2005 and 2006, from 24.12 kilograms per capita to 24.62 kilograms. But there has been a reduction since 1976, when the amount peaked at 34.46 kilograms, and 2000, when the per capita figure was 26.92 kilograms. (However, Stats Can cautions that the figures are "experimental," and should be used "with caution.")

OF COURSE, SOME Toronto immigrants, particularly from South Asia, are bringing their vegetarian culture and lifestyle with them. Many non-vegetarian cuisines, too, have substantially expanded the city's non-meat food choices - think hummus, pasta with pesto, stir-fried tofu and falafel.

"I don't think I'm the average vegetarian in Toronto," says Farley. "The public face of vegetarianism - hippies from the 1970s - doesn't work any more. The reality is that vegetarianism is on a world scale; it's hugely prevalent, especially in a diverse city like Toronto."

Sunita Mohan, a holistic nutritionist and lifelong vegetarian, runs Spices Cafe with her meat-eating husband, Pervez Mashi. The downtown Indian-style restaurant serves both meat and vegetarian dishes, but Mohan says customers usually choose the veggie thali, a daily concoction anchored by chickpeas and lentils with sides of rotating vegetables, often dishes made with sweet potato, spinach or eggplant.

"I was so surprised when people came into the restaurant and ordered the veggie plate more often than the meat one," she says. "But people are getting exposed to new tastes and new ethnic foods ... People are more apt to try new things now."

Mohan, who grew up in Kitchener, remembers a time when it was hard to dine out as a vegetarian.

"Twenty years ago, if we went to a restaurant, people would look at you funny. We ended up ordering pasta or salad because that was all there was on the menu for us to eat."

IF YOU DO DECIDE to go meat-free this year, remember that there's no one way to do it or one method to follow, says Toronto registered dietitian Stephanie De Maio. Vegetarianism, just like any other style of eating, is on a continuum. People can decide simply not to eat red meat or poultry and call themselves vegetarian, notes De Maio. Or they can go vegan, cutting out fish, dairy, eggs and honey. Or they can even choose to eat only raw foods.

"People sometimes feel they need to be all or nothing, that they have to fit into some sort of category. There are no rules around food."

One of the easiest ways to transition into a meatless diet is to slowly add veggie dishes to your regular recipe repertoire, says Vesanto Melina, a Vancouver-based dietitian and long-time vegetarian who has co-authored the popular books Becoming Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan.

"There are probably already three meals that you already like and know how to do. Maybe it's vegetarian chilli and spaghetti with marinara sauce and bean burritos.

"Now, choose three more recipes that you can easily modify, maybe split pea soup without the ham bone, or tacos with refried beans instead of meat, and substitute veggie bacon in a BLT sandwich.

"With just those three minor modifications, you're on a different wavelength ... It's a very simple approach to dealing with the transition."

De Maio, a long-time vegan, says one of the best ways first-time vegetarians can ensure their new diet is well-balanced is to follow Health Canada's 2007 Food Guide. It sets out the proper ways to substitute meat with alternate protein sources, including soy products, nuts and nut butters, and it outlines suitable portion sizes.

Some vegetarians believe they are much healthier than their meat-eating counterparts.

But De Maio says vegetarians, just like everyone else, have to make smart food choices and watch portion sizes.

Even though nuts, nut butters and seeds are a good source of fibre and protein and pack a nutrition punch, they also are high in fat and calories, she says.

A single portion of nuts is about 20 almonds, or two tablespoons of peanut butter, for example, but people can polish off many more in a sitting without thinking.

It just goes to show, she says, that bad eating habits can follow people, no matter what type of cuisine they enjoy.

"French fries are vegetarian," she says. "So are Doritos. If you eat those every day, you will be unhealthy and overweight. You have to make good choices on both counts ...You can be a very bad vegetarian, just like you can be a very bad meat eater."

15+ Reasons to Quit Eating Meat

Some Parents are Homeschooling Their Kids to Avoid Vaccinations

Watch Video:

National Vaccine Information Center

A growing network of parents have decided to homeschool their children, in part because of their belief that mandated vaccinations for public and private school children are a dangerous overreach by state governments.

A group of about 200 parents around the state of Mississippi, for example, home school their kids because they have problems with the state's mandated vaccination schedule.

All states allow unvaccinated children to attend school with a medical doctor's excuse. Mississippi and West Virginia, however, allow no exemptions beyond medical necessity, leaving parents with homeschooling as the only option if they do not want to have their children vaccinated.

http://www.naturalnews.com/

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Less than 30 years ago, 40 million students attended public schools, yet fewer than 100,000 children were home-educated. According to the U.S. Department of Education, over 48 million students enrolled in public schools in 2005, while the number of children being homeschooled has been estimated at just over 2 million.

The numbers of homeschooled children has increased at the rate of about 7% a year, and more than 10% in some states, outpacing the growth of public schools, which has been about 1.3%.

Families homeschool for a wide range of reasons, but at the heart of the matter is what is best for each individual child. Avoiding vaccines is typically not the driving force behind this big decision. However, more parents are clearly opposed to the "mandatory" vaccine laws and understand that vaccinations are not the heavily promoted miracle cure-all that will keep their children from getting sick. Instead, they are seeing the truth: that vaccines carry the risk of serious side effects such as crippling neurological damage like autism and even death.

For example, unexplained allergies and asthma are also on the rise. According to the brand new State of World Allergy Report 2008: Allergy and Chronic Respiratory Diseases, our zeal to reduce infectious disease has led to rapidly increasing allergic diseases that are becoming ever more complex.

Could the increasing number of childhood vaccinations be part of the problem?

Absolutely!

As one study published in 2005 by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found, unvaccinated children suffer lower rates of asthma and allergies than vaccinated children.

Allergies and asthma can severely diminish quality of life and work productivity, and should not be ignored. So when we discuss the overuse of vaccinations, autism is not the only health hazard worthy of note and serious consideration.

Contrary to Popular Belief, Avoiding Vaccinations is Not a Sign of Ignorance

As illustrated in this Clarion Ledger article, the topic of vaccinations is often emotional for both sides of the camp. People who have not done their research are quick to say that it is highly irresponsible and foolish to avoid vaccinations. However, this is quite the oxymoron because mothers with college educations and higher incomes are actually LESS likely to vaccinate their children than those with less education.

One 2006 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that children whose mothers have less than a high school education are 16 percent more likely to have received vaccinations than toddlers whose mothers have graduated college.

Of course, anyone, regardless of education level or income, is capable of making an educated decision about whether or not to vaccinate their children. But college-educated women are perhaps more likely to have read articles questioning vaccine safety -- or at least to have heard about such controversies.

The trend toward not vaccinating has been growing for some time now. Close to 70 percent of physicians say that the number of concerns from parents have increased significantly in recent years.

And rightfully so.

Vaccines given to newborns contain an array of potentially toxic chemicals including:

- Formaldehyde
- Aluminum phosphate (toxic and carcinogenic)
- Antibiotics
- Phenols (corrosive to skin and toxic)
- Live viruses and various other components

The Insanity of the Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule

I published Dr. Donald Miller's excellent article, A User-Friendly Vaccination Schedule in 2004. At that time, 12 different vaccines were given to children before they reached the age of two.

As of 2008, the Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that number has risen to 14 in the first 24 months, plus the meningococcal vaccine, which is to be administered between the age of two and six.

Infants and toddlers aged 0 to 6 years of age are now given vaccines to prevent the following diseases:

Hepatitis B Rotavirus
Hepatitis A Measles
Diphtheria Mumps
Tetanus (lockjaw) Rubella (German measles)
Pertussis (whooping cough) Varicella (chickenpox)
Polio Meningococcal
Pneumococcal infections Influenza (yearly flu shots)
Hemophilus influenzae type b infections

If your child is vaccinated according to the CDC's recommended schedule, by the time your child starts kindergarten he or she will have received 48 doses of 14 vaccines. Of these, 36 doses will be given during the first 18 months of life.

And now consider this: one vaccine injected into a 13-pound, two-month old infant is equivalent to 10 doses of the same in a 130-pound adult. Where is the common sense in these guidelines?

Would any adult concede to being injected with 360 doses of vaccines within a couple of years' span; equal to one injection every other day for two years?

Public health officials have NEVER proven that it is indeed safe to inject this number and volume of vaccines into infants. What's more, they cannot explain why, concurrent with an increasing number of vaccinations, there has been an explosion of neurological and immune system disorders in American children.

There are Other Options

As the trends indicate, many parents are so concerned about the potential dangers of overloading their children with this massive load of vaccines that they resort to home schooling. However, not all parents have the ability to make that type of commitment.

Fortunately, if you are unable to home school, you still have other options.

As I've stated before, I'm not anti-vaccine, but rather pro-vaccine safety. I also believe it is extremely important to have the right to choose; to be allowed to make informed consent decisions about what you want to inject into your child, and yourself, and when.

Dr. Donald Miller is a cardiac surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle and a member of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness. His more sensible vaccination schedule, which I published back in 2004, is worthy of being revisited at this time.

His guidelines can help you devise a more appropriate vaccination plan for your child - a schedule that takes the best interests of your child into consideration rather than what biased government planners cite as being best for society. His is a far better approach than the "one-size-fits-all" dogma foisted on Americans by the CDC panel.

Devising a Sensible Vaccination Plan for Your Child

Your brain has its own specialized immune system, separate from that of the rest of your body. When you are vaccinated, specialized immune cells in your brain, the microglia, become activated.

Multiple vaccinations spaced close together over-stimulate the microglia, causing them to release a variety of toxic elements -- cytokines, chemokines, excitotoxins, proteases, complement, free radicals -- that damage brain cells and their synaptic connections. (The damage caused by these toxic substances is sometimes referred to as "bystander injury.")

In humans, the most rapid period of brain development begins in the third trimester and continues over the first two years. (By then, brain development is 80 percent complete.)

From a risk-benefit perspective, there is little doubt that the risk of neurological and autoimmune diseases from vaccinations at this stage far outweigh the benefits of avoiding the childhood infections that they (supposedly) prevent. (One exception is the hepatitis B vaccine, IF the mother tests positive for hepatitis B.)

As a more sensible, "user-friendly" vaccination schedule, Dr. Miller advises the following:

1. No vaccinations until your child is two years old.
2. No vaccines that contain thimerosal (mercury).
3. No live virus vaccines.
4. The following vaccines can be given one at a time (not as a combination vaccine), every six months, beginning at age 2:

- Pertussis (acellular, not whole cell)
- Diphtheria
- Tetanus
- Polio (the Salk vaccine, cultured in human cells)

And that would be pretty much it as far as vaccinations. Your pediatrician will not like this schedule, but if you have reviewed the evidence and still feel your child should be inoculated to a certain degree, this is a far safer alternative to the standard vaccination schedule.

How to Avoid the Vaccinations You Don't Want

Remember, although exemptions for religious beliefs are becoming harder to obtain in some states like New York. All 50 states have vaccination requirements but all states provide exemptions for medical reasons while 48 states allow exemptions for sincerely held religious beliefs. Another 18 states allow parents to opt out for personal, conscientious or philosophical beliefs as well.

Mississippi and West Virginia only allow exemptions for medical reasons. In some states medical exemptions written by a licensed M.D. or D.O. must conform to CDC contraindication guidelines or public health officials will challenge them.

Maryland, despite their handling of the issue, also still offers the right to opt out for religious beliefs. My previous article, How To Legally Avoid Unwanted Immunizations Of All Kinds, spells out how you go about practicing this right.

Remember, you need to educate yourself on the dangers of the vaccines that your doctor or pediatrician insists on administering., as well as the vaccine laws in your state.

I have numerous articles detailing the dangers of various vaccines on this site, and you have the entire internet at your disposal in addition to what I have documented through the years.

There is also an entire chapter in my book Take Control of Your Health devoted to this very topic, including what you should know before vaccinating, and what to do if you decide not to.

Support the NVIC -- Support Vaccine Safety Reform

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is the American vaccine safety watchdog. They are currently being flooded with vaccine reaction reports and parents reporting that their vaccine exemptions are being pulled or they can't get one. I highly recommend you make a donation to the NVIC to help support them in their efforts to raise awareness about these vital issues and implement vaccine safety reform. Funds are urgently needed to:

Launch a national education campaign about vaccine risks and wellness alternatives to vaccination
Continue to work for vaccine freedom - protect and expand state vaccine exemption laws
Expand counseling services for parents reporting vaccine reactions, injuries and deaths
Hold the International Public Conference on Vaccination Oct. 2-4, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
Educate Congress about the need to separate out the vaccine safety monitoring mechanism from federal health agencies responsible for developing, regulating, making policy for and promoting mass use of vaccines, and make the agency reportable to Congress.

How To Legally Avoid Unwanted Immunizations Of All Kinds

As you read this work and put its principles into practice, there are two basic axioms you never want to forget. They are the rock upon which all your actions are based.

1. Nobody, anywhere or any time and under any circumstances has the right or power in this country to immunize you or your children against your will and conviction. If they attempt to do so, you can legally charge them with "assault with a deadly weapon" and have the full resources of our laws behind you.

2. At all times in attempting to avoid unwanted immunization, you have the Law of the Land behind you. Those who would try to vaccinate you against your will are on very shaky ground. Into every compulsory immunization law in America are written legal exceptions and waivers which are there specifically to protect you from the attempted tyranny of officialdom. It is not only your right, but your obligation to use them, if this is what your conscience tells you.

Article 1
In all your contacts with any member of the school, public health, or legal establishment, always remain calm, courteous, and humbly reverent toward their position. You are only asking of them that which the law duty binds them to give you. There is no reason, or advantage, to be gained by antagonizing them.

Most of these officials believe they are discharging their trust as outlined by law. If they are overstepping the law, then you must very diplomatically bring the true facts to their attention, but without attempting to belittle them.

The more you can preserve their ego, the more easily and quickly you are likely to get what you desire - a waiver of immunization.

Rule No. 1: Do not harass, belittle, or antagonize officials unnecessarily.

Article 2
All compulsory laws concerning vaccination (including the military) contain exceptions and waivers. It is these protections placed in the laws that you may legally use to exclude yourself and your children. Surprisingly, these exceptions were placed there, not for your sake (although you may take advantage of them), but for the protection of the establishment.

How is this? Let us assume that these exceptions were not there and everyone was actually forced to be immunized. Should a child die or become mentally or physically disabled, the parent would have the perfect case to sue the doctor, the school, the health department, and even the state legislature for enormous damages.

Since they allowed no exceptions, they must accept full responsibility for all the adverse consequences of the law.

However, if exception waivers are placed in the law, the responsibility is then transferred back to the parent. If a child should be injured by immunization, the officials can say, "Well, the parent should have exempted him if they thought there was any danger."

Therefore, there is in truth no such thing as a compulsory vaccination law in this country. They are , in essence, voluntary. The problem is that practically no one in authority will let you know this fact.

Rule No. 2: There are no compulsory vaccination laws. All are voluntary, and you are held responsible for the adverse results upon you or your children.

Article 3
While all immunization laws have exceptions you can use, the wording in each state differs, and you must know the exact wording for your state to make the proper request of waiver. This information can be obtained in one of two ways.

1. Go to the reference section of your local library- look in the State Statute Revised Law Book under Public Health Law or Communicable Disease sections. The list of immunization requirements will appear first and then the exemptions will be given. Usually one or two provisions will be listed: either on religious or medical grounds or both.

2. You may call or write your state representative and ask for a copy of the immunization laws in your state. Making this available is part of his job, and it will be sent promptly.

Rule No. 3: Know your own state law so that you can conform to its exact requirements for exemption.

Article 4
There are two basic reasons for exception - medical or religious. Which one you choose will often depend upon the wording of the law in your state and your personal convictions.

We shall discuss medical exemption first. While laws do vary, nearly all states require that a note or certificate of waiver be submitted by a physician licensed in the state of residence. In some areas where states are small and people continually travel from one to another for business, a statement from a physician in a contiguous state will be accepted.

In this letter it is usually necessary to state the reason for the requested waiver and the length of time it should extend. Many laws limit all such letters to a school year and they must be renewed each fall.

The two most valid reasons for medical waiver are "the fear of allergic reaction in a sensitive child" and "to prevent possible damage to a weakened immune system." Both of these can occur in a child who has been immunized, and since no one but the physician and the parent will be held responsible for their consequences, it is up to them to protect the child.

It is possible that some states may require the letter from an M.D. or D.O., but many will allow an exemption letter from a chiropractor if it is courteously and properly written, as outlined above.

Rule No. 4: Medical waivers are always valid but must be written to fit each state law and often need to be renewed annually.

Article 5
The foregoing may work for school exemptions, but are there any such waivers in the Armed Forces? Yes. All branches of the Service provide "immunization waivers."

Again, if they did not you could sue them for millions of dollars if a reaction occurred from their immunizations. Because of these waiver provisions, you become responsible if you react.

When you first sign up or enlist, you must state your objection to the vaccinations and tell whether it is "religious conscience" or medical reasons, such as allergies or a low tolerance to medication of any kind. If you do not show objection at this time, you have given the military the right to do what they will with you.

If there is any difficulty, the same rules apply here as in the school program. Never forget, even though you may be in the Service, no one has the right to immunize you against your will. You do not give up your constitutional rights when you join the Armed Forces.

Rule No. 5: The rules that govern school vaccination exemption also apply to the military. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. They do not know, or are hiding, the facts of the law.

Article 6
What about international travel? May I go around the world without vaccination?

The World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva grants American visitors the right to REFUSE shots when traveling internationally. However, if an area you wish to enter is infected, you may be detained until the public health servant gives you the "go" (at his discretion).

Thousands travel world-wide each year without shots - so you may if that is your choice. Many of our co-workers have traveled over much of the world and have never taken any immunizations, nor were they ever detained.

It would be wise to request a copy of Foreign Rules and Regulations, Part 71, Title 42, on immunization when you receive your passport. Never forget the basic rule, "No one will vaccinate you against your will because by doing so they assume full responsibility for the consequences both legal and medical."

Rule No. 7: You may travel wherever you wish in the world without vaccination. The worst that can happen is that in very rare circumstances you may be detained temporarily.

Some Important Details
The above seven articles constitute all the basic rules. However, there are many important little "tricks of the trade" to having your legal requests honored. These will now be discussed.

While waivers and exemptions are written into all laws on immunization, most public health officials, doctors, and especially school officials are loathe to discuss their existence when questioned, and rarely, to our knowledge, volunteer such information.

A top Philadelphia school official was on the radio with the unequivocal statement, "NO SHOTS, NO SCHOOL."

This statement is of course completely counter to state law, with which presumably he is familiar. Such unwarranted dogmatism is common in the people you will encounter. Once the end of their legitimate authority has been reached, they will use their next most powerful weapon - INTIMIDATION.

They will threaten to keep your child out of school, take him from you, or send you to jail. These are all idle threats because they can do none of these thing, if you follow our simple instructions.

The basic rules have been given to you, but there are a few important details to be considered if the officials start on this course of unlawful intimidation.

1. You must send a letter to the school to inform the education officials of your stand. A phone call is not legal. It can be a note from your doctor, minister, or a notarized letter from you stating your sincere objections to the immunization. If you do not do this and fail to have your child immunized, it could be construed as negligence on your part and in some states there is a possibility of legal action against you.

2. If the school should refuse to honor your letter, request that they give you a statement in writing outlining their reasons for refusal. If they won't, their refusal is legally invalid, and your letter stands; they must enroll your child. If they do (they rarely will) they take the risk of incriminating themselves, especially if they are acting contrary (as is common) to what is specified in the law concerning your rights for exemption. Remember they are on tenuous ground, not you. They are your servants, you are not their servant. If worst comes to worst and you have a very knowledgeable official who writes you a refusal and states accurately the lawful reasons for refusal, he will also in a negative way tell you what the accepted exemptions are, and then you can go about meeting them, by one of the routes suggested in this handout.

3. Child neglect is the one legal point you want to avoid at all costs. No legal parent or guardian can be charged with neglect unless he shows complete lack of concern or action to be more informed. Stripped of legal jargon, this simply means that if you can show that you have investigated the situation, have come to a specific decision concerning immunizations, and have informed the authorities of the same, no neglect charge can be brought. Neglect can be brought only when it can be shown that you have failed to have your children immunized, not out of respect for their medical or spiritual integrity, but only because you were too concerned with other matters.

4. At times there may be a question of whether you have given or withdrawn legal consent. Legal consent is dependent upon being properly informed on both the advantages and the risks in any choice or decision you make. In other words, if a physician were to tell you that vaccination is perfectly safe and effective to obtain your consent, such consent would not be legal because he lied and you have not been properly informed. Conversely, it could be argued that non-consent is not legal if you are not fully informed about the risks and advantages of immunizations.

5. What do I do if everyone refuses to give me a waiver?

This would be an extremely rare circumstance. But should it happen, you are not left without resources. Here is where we pull out one of our big guns. Send notarized letters by certified mail to the vaccine laboratory which makes the shot (ask your doctor for the address), to the doctor who is to administer the shot, to your school principal,to the school board, and to your local health department.

In these letters make it clear that since they have refused to give you a duly requested waiver, you can no longer be held responsible for what may happen to your child if they force these shots upon him. You then state that you will allow immunization if each will present you with a written signed guarantee of safety and effectiveness of the vaccine and that they will consent to assume full responsibility for any and all adverse reactions that your child may develop from the required shots. Of course none will give you such a guarantee. They cannot do so because all vaccines are considered potentially highly toxic. We have yet to hear of an instance of further harassment of parents after such letters have been sent.

That's about all that is needed to obtain the necessary exemptions for your children. All that has been said in this last section (1 to 5) is also applicable to the military and international travel, if required.

Potpourri of Ammunition
"As long as each individual who opposes vaccines has sincere objections, states them in writing, and signs his name - it is considered legal and proper action and must therefore be honored."

"Since many medical controversies exist surrounding immunization, drugs, and various other medications, it mandates that each individual have the right to control his own decisions and freedom of choice; anything less would be contrary to the constitutional laws that protect the citizens' rights. "

"When you deal with school officials and lawyers, you are playing with legal terminology - move the wrong words around and you get hung." The terminology used in this booklet has worked before and should work again.

"It is important to state your objections in such a way that it complies with your state's exemption provisions. They must then accept your request; if they do not, they are breaking their own law." That is why it is absolutely essential that you know your own state law word for word before submitting your objection.

"According to CDC (the federal Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta, Georgia), physicians are required to first inform their patients of the risks involved before they consent to vaccines." If they do not do so, it is prima facie evidence of deceit or negligence on the part of the physician.

This regulation by the federal government would also seem to assume that the patient has the right to refuse if he feels that the risks are too great. If this is so, is not the federal government on record as supporting voluntary immunization and, by obvious implication, against state-enforced compulsory immunization?

Should you ever have to go to court, or what is more likely, to appear before a "kangaroo" court of school and health department officials, here is some class A evidence you might find useful to mention.

- No vaccine carries any guarantee of protection from the laboratory that produced it or the doctor who administered it.

- The U.S. military allows no-nonsense "immunizations waivers."

- There is NO FEDERAL LAW on immunizations. They don't dare. Their lawyers know the consequences.

- Your rights have been infringed upon by officials attempting to use force against your will.

Most state officials like a nice, stress-free job. When you send in your objections and refuse to fit their ordered world by not having your children immunized, you make waves.

This rocks their quiet existence, and there are only two ways their life can become orderly again: either by forcing you to their will or acquiescing to yours. What you must do to obtain an early waiver is to make the latter the easiest path for them.

At first, however, an attempt will usually be made to bend you to their will by some form of intimidation. Many uninformed parents give in to this tack, and so it is tried again and again.

If you are adequately informed, as a reader of this publication should be, you will let the officials know in no uncertain terms that you understand your rights under the law and will not stand for any such shilly-shallying. Invariably, once they discover you are adamant and acquainted with the state law, your waiver will be rapidly forthcoming.

An AcknowledgmentThe greatest part of the material on the first four pages is taken from the work of Mrs. Grace Girdwain, of Burbank, Illinois. Our staff has rearranged and edited the information, but we wish the full credit for its existence to go to this courageous woman who has for twelve years worked arduously, without compensation, to help her fellow Americans obtain their legal rights.

The following is an example of the state of Illionois law (where I live) relating to immunizations. Illinois, like most states has no philosophical objection, but does have a religious one.

Illinois Administrative Code Title 77: Public Health
Chapter I: Department of Public Health
Subchapter i: Maternal and Child Health
Part 665 Child Health Examination Code
Subpart E: Exceptions

Section 665.510 Objection of Parent or Legal Guardian

Parent or legal guardian of a student may object to health examinations, immunizations, vision, and hearing screening tests, and dental health examinations for their children on religious grounds. If a religious objection is made, a written and signed statement from the parent or legal guardian detailing such objections must be presented to the local school authority.

General philosophical or moral reluctance to allow physical examinations, immunizations, vision and hearing screening, and dental examinations will not provide a sufficient basis for an exception to statutory requirements.

The parent or legal guardian must be informed by the local school authority of measles outbreak control exclusion procedures per IDPH rules. The Control of Communicable Diseases (77 Ill. Adm. Code 690) at the time such objection is presented.

Section 665.520 Medical Objections

a) Any medical objections to an immunization must be:

1) Made by a physician licensed to practice medicine in all its branches indicating what the medical condition is.

2) Endorsed and signed by the physician on the certificate of child health examination and placed on file in the child's permanent record.

b) Should the condition of the child later permit immunization, this requirement will then have to be met. Parents or legal guardians must be informed of measles outbreak control exclusion procedures when such objection is presented per Section 665.510.

Biodynamic Gardening

Welcome to the most wonderful way of gardening on this earth!

This is your introduction to a most wonderful way of "super" organic gardening with a series of gardening articles covering a year of totally poison free and fully biodynamic gardening, which is not only permanently sustainable, but gets richer and more fertile season by season and year by year. And best of all - besides being a lot less work - its produce also dramatically improves our health. It will even cure and prevent 'incurable' diseases.

Trace Element Deficiencies - Pesticides and Herbicides. Two major health issues face us today. The deficiency or lack of over 60 vitally important trace elements in all commercially grown food - the cause of many 'incurable' diseases and cancers - and the residues of agricultural poisons on and in our commercially grown food, as well as in our environment. This is an emergent major concern in the biomedical sciences - that these household and garden poisons severely harm our children, as they now have become the strongly implicated causes of ADD and Leukaemia in children, as well as of Parkinson's disease later on (CTV National News, May 27. 2000).

Massive Nurtrient Deficiencies. (Addendum July 20. 2002) To this we must now also add the massive and dramatic reduction of nutrients in today's produce over the last 50 years. Vitamin A has disappeared entirely from today's potatoes, for instance, also 57% of their vitamin C and Iron, 50% of their riboflavin, and 28% of their calcium. In the analysis, the biggest loser was broccoli, a food that epitomizes the dictates of healthy eating. All seven of its measurable nutrients declined, notably calcium, which fell 63%, and iron, which dropped 34%. Broccoli is often cited as an excellent source of calcium and iron.

Transgenic Crops. Add to this the fact that much of our food is now derived from transgenic crops, and we have four very compelling reasons - for the sake of our priceless health - to grow as many of our own vegetables as we possibly can.

For all of these reasons, our chief focus here is the growing of vegetables, to enable people to grow their own organic and completely poison free vegetables containing the complete range of the 72+ natural trace elements for their own and their garden's supreme health. However, all the basic methods of fully biodynamic gardening given here also apply to flower gardens - with the same massive increase in health and abundance.

The organic gardening methods given here are very powerful. Vegetables grown by these methods not only restore the complete natural range of the 72+ nutritional trace elements to those who can grow their own year-round supply of vegetables - resulting in a dramatic increase in their own health - but they also make all agricultural poisons unnecessary.

This eliminates two profound threats to our health and well being. But that's not all; they also result in gardens that are not only permanently sustainable, but become richer and more fertile season by season, and year by year! It's true; you'll see. And if all this were not enough, they also result in a great increase in yield. And best of all, and to top it all off, they also require far less work and time than today's common chemical gardening methods. Finally, they also cost far less! (market gardeners - please take notice!)

Would you like to have beautifully lush, abundant, supremely healthy and, above all, completely poison free vegetable and flower gardens? And would you like to have all this with much less work, and at much less cost? Well, you've come to the right place. For this is exactly what you will find here - a very powerful - we'll come to this in a minute - totally organic and completely natural way of gardening which not only puts the sheer joy of gardening back into gardening, but also keeps you in life-long supreme health.

And if you are raising your own organic vegetables, you will also bask in the profound knowledge and joy that everything you have raised in your garden is not only supremely natural, but also supremely good for you and yours - and for everyone who partakes of your bounty.

Let's put it this way: When our youngest daughter picked a fresh pea pod in the garden and asked, "daddy, can I eat this?", I could say "yes, my love", and my heart lept with joy, for I knew that all in our gardens was as good as only Nature could make it, that only the sun, the wind, the rain and human hands had touched our vegetables, and that everything was as good as could be for us, for the garden, for Nature, for the Earth, and for the Fabric of Life that has woven it, and us, and all, together.

By following the biodynamic gardening method given here, you will also have the profound satisfaction of knowing that your gardens are not only permanently sustainable - but get richer and more fertile season by season, and year by year.

Now you will undoubtedly say, "hold on a minute here, I've never heard of this; this seems impossible". It isn't. In fact, it is exactly how good old Mother Nature works. You see, as little as 500 million years ago, the continents of the Earth were pure, barren rock; nothing but sheer rock and wind-driven sand, and not not a living thing, nor an iota of loam anywhere. And look at it now, or better yet, as it was a couple of hundred years ago - an incredibly rich and abundant Earth, teeming with a cornucopia of Life so great that flights of bird darkened the mid-day sun, that herds of bison stretched from horizon to horizon, and that fish crowded the bays so densely that one had the impression that one could walk across the bay on their backs. These are oft repeated eyewitness accounts of people in very recent history.

The Earth did indeed grow richer, more fertile, and more abundant season by season, and year by year - it's just our modern and simplistic N-P-K agriculture that works the other way around. But the increasing fertility and abundance of Nature did not happen by accident, nor by chance - as some would have you believe; not at all. What is behind all this is an immensely powerful, fundamental universal law; the law of "Progressive Complexity - the law that drives all Growth and evolution from simple beginnings to progressively higher levels of complexity (to whit, the growth from the relatively simple beginnings of a seed, or ovum - to the immense complexity of the fully grown mature plant, animal or human) - from one end of the universe to the other. This law arises - simply, elegantly and beautifully - out of the fist law of thermodynamics, the fundamental law of our universe. And this vast and immensely powerful law turns out to be the inseparable polar complement, or 'mirror twin', of the universal law of Decay. And this is the way it all works - universe, Life, gardens - the whole glorious shebang:

GROWTH DECAY

Simple, beautiful, elegant, intimately familiar - and powerful beyond all imagination; for this law has driven, and still does, the evolution of the whole universe itself. The full implications are mind boggling: Life and its evolution is a fundamental property of this universe. And this is only the first implication; all the other are even more mind boggling - such as The Meaning of Life (but this is another story).

This then is the vast and immensely powerful universal law which has transformed the Earth from an utterly barren and lifeless planet, to one teeming with a rich and abundant cornucopia of Life. And this same law and vast driving forces underlies these fully biodynamic gardening methods, which we engage here, in our favour, in our gardens. And our gardens will indeed get richer and more fertile season by season, and year by year. I have discovered this universal law, but only by default. For reasons which still baffle me no end, our scientists haven't bothered and are still exclusively stuck upon the law of Decay. And it is not that I've discovered this law and then developed these gardening methods. It was exactly the other way around. I've discovered it by gardening, and by pondering upon the driving forces of Growth and Progressive Complexity so obvious and right at hand to any gardener. In other words, Nature herself has shown me how it works.

These gardening articles were first published in "The Gulf Islands Driftwood" between 1979 and 1985, and quickly became the favourite feature of the "Driftwood", on an Island full of expert gardeners. A selection of 52 articles was subsequently published in my little book 'Weeds and Seeds" (Horsdahl and Schubart Publishers Ltd.), now long out of print. And since these articles will give all those with a garden the opportunity to raise their own fully organic, supremely healthy and completely poison free vegetables - and to commercial growers the opportunity to offer "super organic", supremely healthy, and completely poison free vegetables to the public (at a great increase of abundance and great reduction in costs) - I am re-publishing them here, re-written and updated where necessary, as well as some new articles, for ready and long-term availability in this fabulous new medium of the millennium.

Naturally, the powerful 'super' organic methods given here also apply to flower, greenhouse, balcony and indoor gardens. Only the details vary slightly, according to the kinds of flowers grown, and these can be easily obtained from the hundreds of flower gardening books, magazines and Web sites out there.
Happy "super" organic and totally poison free gardening!

What is Biodynamic Soil?

Welcome to the Joy and Beauty of poison-free gardening

Would you like to revel in the profound Joy of gardening - without any poisons, without any hassles, without any worries, with much less work --- yet have incredibly healthy, lush and beautiful gardens - be they flowers and/or veggies???

Well, you've come to the right place, for this is truly the most powerful gardening advice in the world. And these are not hairy-fairy, ivory tower theories - but simple, supremely effective, down-to-earth methods. I have done it for many years in our large market gardens on Salt Spring Island.

You see, our agricultural experts have overlooked something basic - and very important. It is this: Due to its origin and eons-long evolution in the seas (which have always contained all of the 92 natural elements of the Earth in solution - and still do), Life has used all of these 92 elements in all of its basic metabolic and immune functions right from its beginnings - and still does. And this includes small 'traces' of at least 72 'trace' elements. However, and just because these 'traces' are so miniscule, they've been totally ignored by science.

In deadly contrast to all of nature, our modern agriculture and horticulture knows of and maintains only a paltry 8 (!!!) trace elements in its soils. Because of this vast ignorance and neglect, the dozens of 'unknown' and neglected trace elements have either become severely deficient, or entirely absent in our soils. And this lack of over 60 natural trace elements is the cause of practically all plant diseases.

It is that simple; and the solution is just as simple: just use a 72+ trace element fertilizer (we'll get to that in a moment) - and poof - there go all the diseases! No more plant diseases - gone; zilch; kaput; nada; goodbye. All of them. You'll see.

And, consequently, no more fungicides, and no more of all the other terrible poisons. This not only saves you lots of money, work, worry and disappointment - it also saves your health, and the health of your children and your family. Moreover, it's a powerful double-whammy health booster. Besides eliminating these poisons from your food and environment, it also supplies your body, via your veggies, with the complete range of the natural 72+ trace elements - which is such a powerful boost to your health that it cures and prevents a great many 'incurable' diseases.

Now then, because of this aforementioned ignorance, there isn't such a thing as a 72+ trace element chemical fertilizer. No such thing exists. So we need to use what is actually a better alternative - a seaweed mulch, a seaweed compost (excellent), or a fish- or seaweed fertilizer. Like the sea they come from, these fertilizers contain all of the 92 natural elements of the Earth - and in just the right amounts and proportions. Not only that, but these organic fertilizers also contain many complex carbohydrates and amino acids - in a form which is easily absorbed by plants.

And that's it. That's all there ist to it; just use any of these natural 72+ trace element fertilisers, and you're done; no more poisons, no more expenses to buy the stuff, no more expenses to buy the application equipment, no more labour to apply the stuff. And, best of all, no more poisons in your environment - and most importantly, no more poisons on and in your own produce.

And, because of all those lovely trace elements, and the robust health they cause, your gardens will grow like nobody's business. Expect a substantial increase in yield - from 3 to 7-fold.

And, here is the very best and most powerful part of it all: As if all of this were not enough, if you raise your own year-round supply of veggies in this simple, hassle-free, and almost no work way - you too get all those trace elements, via your veggies, into your body - and you'll be just as robustly healthy and disease-free as your veggies!!! You also get to live longer, keep much of your hair, and look younger in the bargain! It's true. You'll see.

That leaves only those pesky insect garden pests. And we can say goodbye to them forever, without doing anything. Well - almost nothing.

Natural Insect Pest Control
From a Single Application!

Here, we get rid of all garden insect pests, without any poisons whatsoever - and without hardly ever lifting so much as a finger - and practically for forever.

And we do this naturally, beautifully, and without any poisons whatsoever!

with two powerful, and suprememly effective means.

How on Earth can this be done? you undoubtedly ask. Here is how. First of all, the full spectrum of the 72+ trace elements substantially increases the power of the plant to defend itself. In nature, insects and disease actually have an important purpose: to eliminate the weak and sick. And if your plants are strappingly healthy, as they will be when given the complete natural range of the 72+ trace elements - they have many ways to defend themselves - like turning their sap bitter - and are much more able to defend themselves against insect pests.

In addition, there is a far more direct, far more powerful and far more effective way of dealing with garden insect pests - just get rid of them. And we can do just that - and very, very beautifully - and very, very naturally, with the second means.
We have here in coastal BC a lovely little spider, which is death on wheels (this thing 'motors') to all garden insect pest. It's called the "Wolf" spider - and for very good reasons.

actual size

Unlike most spiders, these miniscule spiders - about 3/8 of an inch from stem to stern - do not build a web and wait for something edible to happen along. These spiders hunt; they mercilessly and incessantly hunt their prey from dawn to dusk.
enlarged

These fabulous little spiders are relentless and merciless hunters of all manner of insects, their larvae and eggs. Carnivorous, they are completely harmless to all plants, but deadly to all insect pests. And unlike ladybugs, praying mantises and predatory wasps, these tiny spider stay put where they are. They do not fly away. Once you have them, you have them forever. In our market gardens sufficient individuals and eggs survived even the yearly spring plowing and rototilling (twice!!), to re-generate new virtual armies of the all but invisible little spiders in no time flat. So, once you have them, you have them forever. And unlike poisons Wolf spiders are not washed away by rain, nor can insect pests adapt to them. They can never become 'spider-resistant'; it's impossible.

So, a single application of this little known and supremely vorascious natural predatory insect provides permanent and supremely effective insect control. Try and beat this.

All these tiny spiders need is a mulch. This is their natural habitat, and any kind of mulch does the trick. And as is well known, a mulch provides multiple benefits:

- it conserves moisture, and greatly reduces the need for irrigation.
- it keeps the soil cool in the heat of day, and warm at night - as well as early and late in the season.
- it substantially inhibits the growth of weeds.
- it provides a haven for the Wolf spider.
- it's decay rapidly and substantially enriches the organic content, quality, fertility, friability, aeration, moisture holding capacity and soil biota content of the soil - as the first step to a permanently sustainable agriculture which becomes richer and more fertile with every season and with every year.

As is obvious, this is an almost ridiculously cheap horticulture and agriculture. The permanent protection against all insect pest from a single application of a handful of wolf spiders (under favourable conditions, they quickly increase a million-fold) is incomparably cheaper than the frequent applications of poisons, their application and equipment costs, and the consequent threat to our health. All this is not required anymore.

The additional cost of providing a mulch is so massively outweighed by its manifold benefits that its small cost is not even a matter of consideration. And, by using suitable plant species - such as a low-growing clover - a mulch can be grown in place, right where it's wanted.

These tiny Wolf spiders provide almost 100% protection against all insect pests - which is far superior even to our best poisons. All I have ever found is 6 aphids - high up on two 6 foot tall dill plants - in 1 acre of our market gardens. And since all the dozens of other dills did not have any, I think that the spiders simply missed them. I mean, how good can it get?

There. That's it. That's all there is to it. Just do some mulching - which is GREAT for your gardens anyhow - chuck in a handful of the little Wolf spiders, and sit back and relax. You'll never have to think about garden insect pests again. And unless you look for them, you'll never see these miniscule spiders. First of all, they are really tiny; and secondly, they like to hunt out of concealment. It is almost as if they aren't there.

With the 72+ trace elements, and the little Wolf spiders, you now don't need any poisons whatsoever, and your environment will be poison free. And best of all, it is all completely and beautifully natural - the way it is meant to be.

And now, a word about weeds - the perennial scourge of all gardeners. Well, almost all gardeners. I think weeds are an incredibly beautiful and powerful resource. First of all, they are pioneer plants, and most of them will grow where nothing else will grow - like moss on stone - and with great abandon to boot. And with their decay into the soil when they die, they slowly turn utterly barren soil into rich, black, and beautifully fertile loam. Collectively, and over the billennia, they have turned an originally stone-barren Earth into the rich and abundant biosphere it is now. That's a fact. Only the 'Green Life' can do this - and does.

So, I thought, let's do the same, and use them as Nature intended. Like all plants, weeds take the simple elements of the soil and of the air (nitrogen !!!), and turn them into rich and complex organic compounds. And that's exactly what turns stone-barren soil into rich, black loam.

So, instead of poisoning the weeds - God forbid - I use them for a beautiful and perfect, grown-in place mulch. Here is how. I simply let them grow to about 4 inches high, and then shear them and lay the cuttings over as a mulch. This needs to be done only 3 to 4 times per season. And there is my mulch, and also the haven for my favourite little Wolf spiders.

And the results are fabulous. I first tried it around my cucumber plants. And what a beautiful scene it turned out to be. Here were my cucumber plants, surrounded on all sides by this beautiful mat of weed straw, with the cucumbers lying neatly, and dry and clean, on a thick bed of weed-grown straw. Naturally, I tried it with the tomato plants next, with equally beautiful results - and then with all my other crops. The only vegetables it did not work with were the carrots and onions. Shearing among these took too heavy a toll on the slender seedlings. And to cut down on the weeding among those, I used a newspaper mulch instead. It worked wonderfully well.

Many people say that weeds take nutrients away from other plants. This is only true in very, very poor soil, and then only temporarily. You see, the nutrients don't go away. When the sheared weeds decay, all the nutrients go right back into the soil, exactly where they came from. Indeed, you get more nutrients.

Like all plants, weeds also absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere (70% nitrogen) - and when they decay, this nitrogen goes into the soil !!! - as a part of complex and durable organic compounds. So, you actually get a substantial net gain of nutrients - and of one of the most important ones to boot.

In addition, you also get the beautiful increase in the quality, friability and fertility of the soil that the decay of all organic materials in the soil generates. So, instead of hating weeds, as I was brought up to do, I began to cherish them, and now I love them, for the rich and multiple benefits they provide.

And if this beautiful weed mulch is to 'unsightly' for your flower gardens, do the next best thing, as I did in my flower gardens. I used a bark mulch (do not use cedar bark mulch) and chucked the few weeds that made it through the mulch under the shrubbery, out of sight, and let them decay and do their beautiful job there. And after a while, I had a rich source of beautiful humus right at hand under my shrubberies. The only consideration to keep in mind is to shear the weeds before they go to seed.

So, here goes the last reason to use poisons - against weeds. And instead of poisons in your soil and home environment, you get a very substantial increase in the fertility, quality and friability of your soil.

There is, actually, a vast and immensely powerful universal law behind all this. It is the universal law of "Progressive Complexity", the law that 'drives' all Growth and Evolution. This is the same law that has driven the evolution of the whole universe itself from the ultimate simplicity of pure energy - to the astronomical complexity of its present state. The same law also drives the evolution of the elements from the elementary simplicity of hydrogen to the 92-fold complexity of uranium; and the evolution of Life from simple bacteria to the immense complexity of our kind and selves - as well as the Growth of all living things from simple seed or ovum, to the staggering complexity of a fully developed organism.

It's a fundamental universal law - and as it turns out, the 'mirror twin' of the universal law of decay. And although we see this immensely powerful law at work it in us, all around us, and everywhere we turn - the law of progressive complexity has not been recognized by our science. Go figure. 'Tis a bit baffling - to say the least.

So, in addition to all the rich and manifold benefits of poison-free gardening - not least among them the priceless gift of supreme health - you also have the deep satisfaction of knowing - by using weeds to increase the complexity and fertility of your soils - that you are actually working hand in hand with the fundamental laws of our biosphere - and of our universe itself.

Building healthier homes and buildings

Constructing Healthy, Comfortable, Durable, Energy Efficient and Environmentally Responsible Homes and Buildings

People live inside their homes over half of their life and indoors 90% of the time, yet the indoor air quality is 3 to 5 times contaminated than outdoors. The air we breathe indoors is the most controllable part of the building that can affect our health. Several factors contribute to this less than desirable indoor air quality (IAQ)). Some of which are listed below. It is important to remember that even healthy people that don't seam to notice the poorer indoor air quality may indeed show minor health symptoms like an occasional irritated throat or sinus, general malaise or a nagging headache. Poor indoor air quality may prolong an existing "cold" infection or bronchitis. Young children, the elderly and people with suppressed immune systems are generally inside all the time and must be especially diligent. Chemically sensitive people are extremely aware of poor air quality and must go to extreme measures to prevent reactions. Asthmatics must be aware of their allergy and asthma triggers. We have all heard of the "sick building" syndrome.

Strategy for improving indoor air quality:

1. Reduce the pollutants in the first place.
2. Use fresh air ventilation to flush the indoor air.
3. Clean the indoor air with a quality air filtration system.

Sources of indoor air pollution:

Out gassing of fumes from building materials.

Many types of construction materials release gas contaminants (out gassing) for many years after construction is complete. These materials include plywood, particle board, cabinets, adhesives, flooring, paint, carpeting, fabrics, furniture, etc. to name a few.

Formaldehyde is the most prevalent chemical that is released. It is used widely in the manufacture of building materials such as particle board and carpeting. Small concentrations can cause eye, nose and throat irritations, wheezing, and skin rash. Higher concentrations can trigger asthma. It has been shown to cause cancer in animals. There dozens of other chemicals also.

In a healthier house, all materials are scrutinized for out-gassing of chemicals and an optimum choice of material is made. There are several strategies for mitigating the release of these chemicals, but the best strategy is to eliminate them as most as possible in the house.

Garages

For better health, you might want reconsider an attached garage. Though it is convenient in winter, the air quality standard inside the house is compromised. Research has shown carbon monoxide levels in the house remain elevated for 8 hours after the car is started in the garage and backed out. This is important if small children or elderly folks remain in the house during the day. Also pesticides, fertilizers, gasoline, oil, paint, paint thinners, solvents, other chemicals, etc. release fumes are always present throughout the house even with the door closed and sealed.

Here's how the garage fumes enter the house. 1).The exhaust fans in bathrooms and in the kitchen when operating create a slightly negative pressure in the house that sucks in air from where ever it can including the garage. It comes in through cracks and holes in the separating wall and the attic (it is hard to seal the attic) and from a less than perfectly sealed door. 2). Same as above but the outside wind pressure is the driving force. 3). Diffusion of gases.

If it is desired to have an attached garage, consider these improvements:

1. Construct a breeze way or enclosed walkway between the garage and the house with weather-stripped doors on each side with outside ventilation in this separating area. This is only possible, of course, if planned before the house is built.
2. Install a ventilated paint cabinet in the garage on an outside wall to put all the chemicals, paints, thinners, pesticides, and etc. Install two louvered and screened vent holes through the back of the cabinet and through the wall to the outside air. Put one vent high and the other low. Put a weather stripping seal around the cabinet door and keep the door tightly closed. This way the fumes are vented outdoors and not into the garage. While this paint cabinet vents paint fumes it does nothing for car exhaust.
3. Put an exhaust fan with timer in the garage to vent the car exhaust and other garage fumes. If you have a gas appliance in the garage such as a furnace check with building officials before installing.

Fresh air ventilation

The new rule is "built it tight and ventilate it right". The best ventilation systems draw outside air from high off the ground and pass it through an air to air heat exchanger. The incoming air is warmed up by the out-going stale air to save energy . The incoming air is passed through filters of 0.01 to 0.3 microns size to remove the tiniest pollutants like pollen and dust. Stale air is steadily drawn out of the house from the bathroom, kitchen, (even from under the kitchen sink if desired) and bedroom closets. This system is controlled by a timer and uses high efficiency electric motors in the fans. There are many specific scenarios depending on the existing heating system and size of building.

Point locations of rapidly exhausting stale air are used in addition. These locations are in the bathroom and over the kitchen stove.

Of course, the best ventilation is an open window on a cool summers eve!

Gas appliances

The intelligent decision is to always install direct vent or power vent gas water heaters and gas furnaces because of the risk of back drafting due to kitchen and bath exhaust fans and high outside winds. The proper combustion of the gas flame is greatly reduced even with minute back pressures. Carbon monoxide levels increase thousands of times if the flame fumes are drawn back into the house.

Carbon monoxide detectors are recommended to be installed near every gas appliance. Think about a tree branch causing unseen damage to the outside vent or cap. The famous Ellensburg wind can create unbalanced air pressures in buildings.

Mold, mildew and condensation

Mold and mildew strive on wet surfaces. Eliminate the moisture and you eliminate mold and mildew - easier said than done. The worst and most insidious moisture problems are deep in the walls, above the ceiling, and/or below the finish flooring where you can't see it until there is a structural problem like the ceiling falling down or the wall or floor buckling. Proper workmanship of the initial construction is imperative to prevent these problems and well as correct use of materials..

Moisture moves through walls, ceilings, floors in three ways.

1. Air leaking through a wall carrys moisture with it. Depending on temperature gradient inside the wall, this moisture can condense just like your breath on a window pane. Attention to construction detail is a must.
2. Diffusion of moisture. Water molecules diffuse their way through the wall material. They travel in the same direction as the heat flow and in fact are driven by the heat. Good quality sealer and enamel paint can greatly reduce diffusion.
3. Flowing liquid water from leaks in the roof, shower pan, plumbing, window flashing, etc. Again construction workmanship and details are all important.

There are many strategies to prevent moisture from getting into the walls and ceilings - the first line of defense is a good enamel paint on the room side of the surface along with proper ventilation. The second line of defense is allowing the moisture that has entered a wall, ceiling or floor to dry to the outside.

Floors are damaged mostly by liquid water from leaky plumbing, spillage, failed caulking and proximity to ground moisture.

Carpeting

Carpeting traps dust, dirt, mites, pollen, etc. Carpeting is a source for asthma and allergy triggers. When you walk on it, these pollutant are stirred up and are drawn toward your face by the warm air convection surrounding your body. Research has shown airborne particle concentrations can be 3 times higher around your mouth and nose than in the air that is away from your body. In a small way, it's like you're vacuuming the carpeting with your nose!

In the average house with an average age carpet, if you could magically make the carpet and pad disappear but leave the dirt - you would have a layer of dirt about 1/8" thick across the floor!

Hardwood floors are easy to clean and last for over a hundred years. Though initially more expensive than carpeting, when measured over time hardwood floors are cheaper.

A good compromise is to have a hard surface floor with area rugs that can be taken outside for shaking and cleaning.

Good choices for earth-friendly flooring is certified hardwood, bamboo, linoleum and ceramic tiles.

Vestibules, entrances, and mud rooms

At the entrances to a house there should be a place to wipe off your boots/shoes or better yet remove your outside footwear. Ideally, this place should be a vestibule or mud room where there is an outside door and an inner door - that way this rooms stops the rush of cold outside air coming in and the warm inside leaking out. This room could have a heater to dry snowy or wet clothes. The outside dirt and contaminants remain here and are not brought into the house. Energy efficiency, health improvement and practically in one room.

Radon

Radon is not considered too likely a risk in central Washington. You never know for sure unless you test for it which is easy and cheap. While the house is being built, it is easy and cheap to install a plastic ground cover in the crawl space to vent any radon/moisture/ground gases to the outdoors . It's like cheap insurance. Remember what's in the air in your crawl space is also in the air inside your house.

Free tip!

If you read this far congradulations. Here's a free tip. The two things one can do to improve the indoor air quality that is absolutely free -

1. No smoking.
2. Take shoes off at the door.

Building More Comfort Into Buildings

Climatological Overview of Kittitas Valley

The Kittitas Valley region is "heating" dominated. It is important to understand the basic climatic data to accurately calculate the heating and cooling loads needed, avoid potential moisture problems and calculate solar heating gain.

Ellensburg has annual average total precipitation of 9 inches and 28 inches of snow. Ellensburg has 6645 degree heating days and 332 cooling degree days. The coldest day of record is -29F in 1927.

Cle Elum has annual average total precipitation of 22 inches and 77 inches of snow. Cle Elum has about 6926 heating degree days and 219 cooling degree days. The coldest day of record is -21F in 1950.

Yakima has 5967 heating and 458 cooling days with and average annual day and night relative humidity of 60%. Their coldest day was -24F in 1919.

In the winter this region has approximately one day out of three that is clear or partly clear (the other 2 out of 3 days are cloudy). During the summer 3 days out of 4 are clear or partly clear.

Per ASHRAE definitions, this region is classified as COLD; that is, more than 4500 heating degree day but less than 8,000 (severe cold!).

What is a heating degree day?

Early this century heating engineers developed the concept of heating degree days as a useful index of heating fuel requirements. They found when the daily mean temperature is lower than 65 degrees, most buildings require heat to maintain an inside temperature of 70 degrees. The daily mean temperature is obtained by adding together the maximum and minimum temperatures reported for the day and dividing the total by two. Each degree of mean temperature below 65 is counted as one heating degree day. Thus if the maximum temperature is 70 degrees and minimum 52 degrees, four heating degree days would be produced. (70 + 52 = 122; 122 divided by 2 = 61; 65-61 = 4.) If the daily mean temperature is 65 degrees or higher, the heating degree day total is zero. The cooling degree statistic is the summer counterpart of the heating degree day.

Heating a house

There are several conventional strategies for heating a house and numerous types and manufacturers of mechanical heating equipment. The smart choice is a correct match of the size of the heater to the heat loss calculations of the building. Distribution of the heat throughtout the house is also calculated. Generally the higher efficiency heaters are less expensive in the long term. The economic break even period is 3 to 6 years for a more expensive but higher efficiency heater than an initially cheaper but less efficient one.

Some common choices of heating types in our region are forced-air, hot water radiator, hydronic, electric baseboard, and gas log stoves.

Forced-air unfortunately stirs up dust and keeps allergens suspensed in the air. This is the worst type of heater for anybody with allergies or asthma. Hydronic systems heat the floor and the heat rises to warm the room - no more cold floors to put your bare feet on. Hot water or steam radiator heat has been around for a long time and is still a very good method of delivering heat. The radiators radiate heat much the same way as a hot fireplace would but without the smoke and flames. The radiators are great to set on after coming inside from outdoor winter activities. Electric baseboard heat is clean and healthy and the equipment is very cheap but the cost of electric is the higher than natural gas, propane, oil, wood, etc. In the long term, electric is usually the most expensive.

If you built a high performance "not so big" house of around 1,200 square feet, it should be able to be heated for a dollar a day average. In this scenerio, electric heat begins to become competative.

Solar heating

Passive solar heating uses traditional building elements like insulation, south-facing glass, and massive floors to achieve comfort heating. These beautiful, comfortable and healthy living spaces can be built for no extra cost while increasing affordability through lower utility payments. They also keep investment dollars in the local building industry rather than transferring them to short term energy imports. Passive solar buildings are better for the environment while contributing to an energy independent, sustainable energy future.

Advances in glass technology have perhaps been the single largest contributor to building efficiency since the 1970s and they play an important roll in solar design. Some window advances include:
* Double and triple pane windows with much higher insulating values.
* Low emissivity or Low-E glass employing a coating which lets heat in but not out.
* Argon (and other) gas filled windows that increase insulating values above windows with just air.
* Phase-change technologies that can switch from opaque to translucent when a voltage is applied to them.

Cooling

Because of our climate only the worst planned houses require air-conditioning. Air-conditioning is expensive to buy and expensive to operate. Proper planning can almost completely eliminate the need for this equipment in a house in our region. Some ideas to reduce summer heat -

- Extend roof overhangs enough to shade the windows during summer.
- Install glazing that has reflective coatings.
- Install awnings over windows
- Plant trees or shrubs to block the sun.
- Close windows during heat of day and open in evenings.
- Install a ceiling fan.

Swamp coolers are generally not a good idea because they can harbor mold and mildew and these can cause health problems. If you use one, please follow the cleaning requirements.

A properly and carefully though out building plan that includes high performance insulation and glazing specifications along with landscaping eliminate the need and expense of air-condition in our region.

The money you save by not installing an air-conditioner and the energy to run it, you can put into better windows and insulation which also help to conserve heat in the winter.

Humidity

Comfortable humidity levels are generally 30 to 60% relative humidity. This is easy to achieve in our climate. Kittitas Valley is very forgiving to excessive humidity. The only danger areas are bathrooms or other wet locations that may grow mold and mildew if not ventilated correctly.

General comfort

What is a comfortable environment inside your house? It is not a cold floor, or a cold draft, or smelly cabinets, or sneezing. It is a fairly uniform temperature gradient from floor to ceiling. It is adquate fresh air flushing out the stale air. It is daylight from the windows penetrating deep into the rooms.

Proper and appropriate plans with good construction technique and attention to building details can achieve a very satisfactory level of comfort in your home. After all, isn't this what a home is for?

CEDAR NUT OIL WITH EXTRACTS!

INCREDIBLE BENEFITS OF CEDAR NUT OIL PLUS THE EFFECT OF SEA BUCKTHORN BERRY!

Siberian Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil Extract

The sea-buckthorns (Hippophae L.) are deciduous shrubs in the genus Hippophae, family Elaeagnaceae. The name sea-buckthorn is hyphenated here to avoid confusion with the buckthorns (Rhamnus, family Rhamnaceae). It is also referred to as "sea buckthorn", seabuckthorn, sandthorn or seaberry.

Description and distribution

There are 6 species and 12 subspecies native over a wide area of Europe and Asia, including China, Mongolia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Finland, Sweden and Norway. More than 90 percent or about 1.5 million hectares of the world's sea buckthorn resources can be found in China where the plant is exploited for soil and water conservation purposes. The shrubs reach 0.5-6 m tall, rarely up to 10 m in central Asia, and typically occur in dry, sandy areas. They are tolerant of salt in the air and soil, but demand full sunlight for good growth and do not tolerate shady conditions near larger trees.

The common sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is by far the most widespread, with a range extending from the Atlantic coasts of Europe right across to northwestern China. In western Europe, it is largely confined to sea coasts where salt spray off the sea prevents other larger plants from out-competing it, but in central Asia it is more widespread in dry semi-desert sites where other plants cannot survive the dry conditions; in central Europe and Asia it also occurs as a subalpine shrub above tree line in mountains, and other sunny areas such as river banks.

Common sea-buckthorn has branches that are dense and stiff, and very thorny. The leaves are a distinct pale silvery-green, lanceolate, 3-8 cm long and less than 7 mm broad. It is dioecious, with separate male and female plants. The male produces brownish flowers which produce wind-distributed pollen.

Berries and leaves

The female plants produce orange berries 6-9 mm in diameter, soft, juicy and rich in oils. The berries are an important winter food resource for some birds, notably fieldfares.

Leaves are eaten by the larva of the coastal race of the ash pug moth and by larvae of other Lepidoptera including brown-tail, dun-bar, emperor moth, mottled umber and Coleophora elaeagnisella.

Hippophae salicifolia (willow-leaved sea-buckthorn) is restricted to the Himalaya, to the south of the common sea-buckthorn, growing at high altitudes in dry valleys; it differs from H. rhamnoides in broader (to 10 mm broad), greener (less silvery) leaves, and yellow berries. A wild variant occurs in the same area, but at even higher altitudes in the alpine zone. It is a low shrub not growing taller than 1 m with small leaves 1-3 cm long.

Harvesting and landscaping

Harvesting is difficult due to the dense thorn arrangement among the berries on each branch. A common harvesting technique is to remove an entire branch, though this is destructive to the shrub and reduces future harvests. A branch removed in this way is next frozen, allowing the berries to be easily shaken off. The branches are cut, deep frozen to −32°C, then shaken or abraded for removal of the berries.

The worker then crushes the berries to remove up to 95% of the leaves and other debris. This causes the berries to melt slightly from the surface as the work takes place at ambient temperature (about 20°C). Berries or the crushed pulp are later frozen for storage.

The most effective way to harvest berries and not damage branches is by using a berry-shaker. Mechanical harvesting leaves up to 50% in the field and the berries can be harvested only once in two years. They only get about 25% of the yield that could be harvested with this relatively new machinery.

During the Cold War, Russian and East German horticulturists developed new varieties with greater nutritional value, larger berries, different ripening months and a branch that is easier to harvest. Over the past 20 years, experimental crops have been grown in the United States, one in Nevada and one in Arizona, and in several provinces of Canada.

Sea-buckthorn is also a popular garden and landscaping shrub, particularly making a good vandal-proof barrier hedge with an aggressive basal shoot system exploited in some parts of the world as wind breaks and to stabilize riverbanks and steep slopes. They have value in northern climates for their landscape qualities, as the colorful berry clusters are retained through winter. Branches may be used by florists for designing ornaments. The plant is the regional flora of the Finnish region of Satakunta.

Nutrients and potential health effects

Sea-buckthorn berries are multipurposed, edible and nutritious, though very acidic and astringent, unpleasant to eat raw, unless 'bletted' (frosted to reduce the astringency) and/or mixed as a juice with sweeter substances such as apple or grape juice.

When the berries are pressed, the resulting sea-buckthorn oil separates into three layers: on top is a thick, orange cream; in the middle, a layer containing sea-buckthorn's characteristic high content of saturated and polyunsaturated fats; and the bottom layer is sediment and juice. Containing fat sources applicable for cosmetic purposes, the upper two layers can be processed for skin creams and liniments, whereas the bottom layer can be used for edible products like syrup.

Nutrient and phytochemical constituents of sea-buckthorn berries have potential value as antioxidants that may affect inflammatory disorders, cancer or other diseases.

The fruit of the plant has a high vitamin C content -- in a range of 114 to 1550 mg per 100 grams with an average content (695 mg per 100 grams) about 12 times greater than Oranges -- placing sea-buckthorn fruit among the most enriched plant sources of vitamin C. The fruit also contains dense contents of carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, dietary minerals, β-sitosterol and polyphenolic acids.

Apart from being nourishing, the juice has a freezing point of −22 degrees Celsius allowing it to remain a liquid even in sub-zero temperatures.

Consumer products

Sea-buckthorn oil has been used as traditional therapy for diseases. As no applications discussed in this section have been verified by Western science and sufficient clinical trial evidence, such knowledge remains mostly unreferenced outside of Asia and is communicated mainly from person to person.

Grown widely throughout its native China and other mainland regions of Asia, sea-buckthorn is an herbal medicine used over centuries to relieve cough, aid digestion, invigorate blood circulation and alleviate pain. In Mongolia, extracts of sea-buckthorn branches and leaves are used to treat gastrointestinal distress in humans and animals.

Bark and leaves are used for treating diarrhea and gastrointestinal and dermatologic disorders. Topical compressions are used for rheumatoid arthritis. Flowers may be used as a skin softener.

For its hemostatic and anti-inflammatory effects, berry fruits are added to medications for pulmonary, gastrointestinal, cardiac, blood and metabolic disorders in Indian, Chinese and Tibetan medicines. Sea-buckthorn berry components have potential anticarcinogenic activity.

Fresh juice, syrup and berry or seed oils are used for colds, fever, exhaustion, as an analgesic or treatment for stomach ulcers, cancer, and metabolic disorders.

Called 'Chharma' in some native languages, oil from fruits and seeds is used for liver diseases, inflammation, disorders of the gastrointestinal system, including peptic ulcers and gastritis, eczema, canker sores and other ulcerative disorders of mucosal tissues, wounds, inflammation, burns, frostbite, psoriasis, rosacea, lupus erythematosus, and chronic dermatoses. In ophthalmology, berry extracts have been used for keratosis, trachoma, eyelid injuries and conjunctivitis. The sea-buckthorn oil is also known to kill tiny parasitic mites called Demodex.

Sea Buckthorn Oil

Due to its unique botanical and nutritional properties, and there being no reported evidence of sea-buckthorn oil causing adverse reactions or negative side effects, the oil is also used as a natural agent that may benefit diseases of mucous membranes, including Aphthous ulcers, esophagitis, acid reflux, and peptic ulcers, as well as dermatological diseases and skin conditions.

In Russia and China, pulp oil may also be used topically to treat skin burns from radiation. Due to its ability to absorb ultraviolet rays, pulp oil is purported to reduce risk of radiation burns for Russian astronauts working in space.

Currently, cosmetic companies are adding sea-buckthorn oil to anti-aging preparations for skin rejuvenation and accelerated healing properties. It is also being used topically as a natural treatment for eczema, acne rosacea, acne and acne scars, and as a lotion for minimizing stretch marks

INCREDIBLE BENEFITS OF CEDAR NUT OIL PLUS THE EFFECT OF ROSE HIP BERRY OIL!

Whole Rose Hip Oil Extract

The rose hip and rose haw, is the pomaceous fruit of the rose plant, that typically is red-to-orange, but might be dark purple-to-black in some species. Contrary to the fairly common myth, rosehips are not poisonous.

Rose hips of some species, especially Rosa canina (Dog Rose) and R. majalis, have been used as a source of Vitamin C. Rose hips are commonly used as an herbal tea, often blended with hibiscus and as an oil. They can also be used to make jam, jelly, marmalade and wine. Rose hip soup, "nyponsoppa," is especially popular in Sweden. Rhodomel, a type of mead, is made with rose hips.

Some species of rose are sometimes referred to as rose hip, including Rosa canina (dog rose), R. rubiginosa, and R. moschata (Musk-rose).

Health benefits

- Particularly high in Vitamin C, with about 1700-2000 mg per 100 g in the dried product, one of the richest plant sources.
- RP-HPLC assays of fresh rose hips and several commercially available products revealed a wide range of L-ascorbic acid content, ranging from 0.03 to 1.3%.
- Rose hips contain vitamins C, D and E, essential fatty acids and antioxidant flavonoids.
- Rose hip powder is a remedy for rheumatoid arthritis.
- Rose hips from the dog rose have antioxidant values that far exceed other berries such as blueberries
- As an herbal remedy, rose hips are attributed with the ability to prevent urinary bladder infections, and assist in treating dizziness and headaches. Rose hips are also commonly used externally in oil form to restore firmness to skin by nourishing and astringing tissue.
- Brewed into a decoction, can also be used to treat constipation.
- Rose hip oil contains a lot of iron, so some women brew rose hip tea during menstruation to make up for the iron that they lose with menses

Usage

Rose hips are used for herbal tea, jam, jelly, syrup, beverages, pies, bread, marmalade, and rose hip oil.

A few rose species are sometimes grown for the ornamental value of their hips, such as Rosa moyesii, which has prominent large red bottle-shaped fruits.

Rose hips have recently become popular as a healthy treat for pet chinchillas. Chinchillas are unable to manufacture their own Vitamin C, but lack the proper internal organs to process many vitamin-C rich foods. Rose Hip Oil provides a sugarless, safe way to increase the Vitamin C intake of chinchillas and guinea pigs.

Rose hips are also fed to horses. The dried and powdered form can be fed at a maximum of 1 tablespoon per day to improve coat condition and new hoof growth.

The fine hairs found inside rose hips are used as itching powder.

Roses are propagated from hips by removing the seeds from the aril (the outer coating) and sowing just beneath the surface of the soil. Placed in a cold frame or a greenhouse, the seeds take at least three months to germinate.

In World War II, the people of England gathered wild-grown rose hips and made a Vitamin C syrup for children. This was because German submarines were sinking many commercial ships: citrus fruits from the tropics were very difficult to import.

By indigenous people

Rose hips were used in many food preparations by the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Rose hips are used for colds and influenza. The Latin binomial for this herb is Rosa laevigata.

BOOK REVIEWS:

I finished reading the entire series about a year ago, after a struggle with a mean case of shingles, and had wanted to write this last summer, but needed to catch up around my home from having been so ill for three months.

I am still amazed at how I found so much of what I read connected with what I've learned with mind and heart over the course of my more than 66 years. But then, the size of miracles -- which come naturally to the Children of the Father -- doesn't matter at all.

Having been a student-teacher-minister of A Course in Miracles since 1984, and knowing all the seemingly coincidental happenings that brought me to that -- and now this -- a return to the path upon which I had begun in 1969, but with the full understanding of what prompted me to follow in it, and brought it all into my full consciousness. I do, however, find some difficulty in putting it into words, there's just so much to tell!

It especially struck me when I came to the writing in one of the books about "Lila", which is one of the names given me of my Spirit Guides.

I only wish there were more books in the series -- they were difficult to set aside --as had been the Course -- it easily made an avid and focused student of me. The heart knows Truth when it presents Itself.

In the embracing arms of God's Love we may all be found, literally, if we so choose ~
