From programmer to landowner: personal experience of building a kin’s domain

Vadim Karabinsky is one of the founders of the settlement «Zalesye» in Karelia. 15 years ago, he decided to move out of town and found his kin’s domain on three hectares of land. During this time, he built a house, a stable, set up a vegetable garden and began to plant a forest.

The idea to move from a city to a forest came to Vadim after he got acquainted with the books of the Ringing Cedars of Russia that his parents gave him. Here is what Vadim himself tells about how he decided to found his Space of Love:

«I was a student at the time. Having started reading books, at first I did not agree with these ideas. I am a programmer, and for my technical mind it was strange. But my mother and brother did not argue with me. They asked to finish reading. I read up to the idea of a kin’s domain. And then I realized that you can live not only in a city. You can live on your own land, build your own house, plant your garden, give birth to children, and live a life in eternal beauty.»

According to Vadim, moving to one’s own land and changing lifestyle to a more natural one is a difficult process, but it adds 20-30 years to life. «Our old age will not be with pain, but without it. In a more perfect environment, more perfect thoughts come. There is an artificial information space in the city, but here it is more from God», says Vadim.

At the same time, Vadim does not refuse the benefits of civilization. He lives on his own land, does not watch TV, and does not listen to the radio. But he earns money through the Internet, because this is his profession. «We don't want to go into caves, like ancient people. Let everything technical serve the Good. We can take the best from life, but be closer to nature.»

In his domain and settlement, Vadim focused not on his personal economy, but on the revival of nature around him. He says: «People expect me to have a large vegetable garden and animals. But I have a different approach. First of all, I try to invest my energy in the forest garden. This is a garden that is planted interspersed with forest trees. Our task is to grow everything without chemical fertilizers, that’s why we plant trees this way. If you plant monocultures in rows, then they are susceptible to pests and diseases. Forest trees protect fruit trees from diseases».

Vadim also plants walnut trees. According to him, he selects special varieties of American and Canadian nuts that are resistant to frost. In addition, Vadim has a vegetable garden and greenhouses. Everything that is created on his kin’s domain is completely environmentally friendly: «We grow vegetables and fruits without chemicals. The lye replaces almost 100% of household and hygienic chemicals. In construction, we try to avoid modern materials, preferring wood, sawdust, and hay. A little conscious effort - and it turns out that I am left with 100 times less plastic waste than if I lived an ordinary life in the city. In the store I buy only cookies without chemicals. I bake the bread myself, but I still can't make cookies. In winter, if my vegetables run out, I buy from the neighbors or at the store. Nothing more».

Vadim gave up personal vehicles. According to him, earlier he had three cars. Now he is sure: personal vehicles are the main polluter of our cities. When Vadim needs to visit the city, he travels by public transport. He rides a horse in the settlement and around his domain.
